Before we all jump on board, just how suitable is Llanberis for the variety of models we saw at Mayhem this year? Blackheath might find it a bit difficult to lay on a straight running demo and if Tug Kenny's Red Pelican does a repeat act it might be difficult to get it back even if it did go down with all lights blazing. I think there are a number of people who would think twice about putting their boat on a water that's over 100 feet deep and prone to rough conditions even if you hairy chested Welshmen think nothing of it.

Lyn Gwynant and Afon Gwynant would be a far better place to hold a regatta of this sort.

Any venue needs to be suitable for the range of Mayhem activities we saw at Wicksteed. Previous posts suggest that Llanberis could be a bit hostile on a bad day and we don't all want to troop down/up to Wales and find that we can't run. Also, how do you lay out a course on a 100 foot deep lake?

I'm more than happy to trek to Wales but the venue needs to be flexible enough to cope with Mayhem requirements. And that includes being able to wade out and keep your head above water!

At Llanberis (Lyn Padarn) the lake IS big and deep but that is not the whole story. There is an area of the lake, close to where we sail,  flanked by a low wall and footpath and backed by a mown grass area,  which is wading depth out for about 15 yards. Quite suitable for laying a steering course.

Whilst the waves on the main lake  can get high, it is unusual for this to be any real problem for most models. If conditions do get really wild there are several sheltered "lagoons" (see attached photo) which can be used.

However it must be said that the water level can get higher overnight after heavy rain (not infrequent in North Wales  :'()  which can sometimes affect things - it never stops model sailing though O0

I have walked along these lagoons many times.
Lots of lagoons, of different sizes, so you could have different themeed areas.

Also car parking and toilets.

Is there a slipway as well? Or is my memory playing tricks.

And from the lagoons you can sail off into the big lake if you want.
Also you are away from the main touristy bit of Llanberis.

Is there a campsite near Llanberis??

I will be back in Wales in the late summer. So I could attend then.

below is a link to an arial shot of the lagoon area.

Right been to the Lake today and there is a slight change of plan so to speak at the moment I am in negotiation with Pa darn Country park which is located on the opp side to where we normally sail from but has 2 very sheltered lagoons which does not suffer from kids and canoes etc.One lagoon could ho;d a steering course v easily and is only 2ft deep(ideal for tug Kenny!!!) the other is I would say over 5ft deep easy shore access all round both lagoons and access for the more adventurous of you who wan to sail in a PROPER !!! Lake.Hopefully Robert Davies will post some piccies as me forgot camera silly me.More details will be posted as soon as I know them.Car parking is no problem at all 20ft away from the lake,as for the wifes and girlfriends 100yds away there is craft shops and the slate museum which is free admission. At teh moment a £2 parking fee applies but if I can get this waived and still charge £2 £1 will go to the RNLI and the other to the museum that is what I am proposing.Hopefully htey will agree to this and we can then be seen to do somethign worthwhile.

Subject to permission the preferred option for the 'do' is pictured below:

It consists of three parts:

Lagoon 1 General sailing (5ish foot deep)

This bridge leads to lagoon2

Part two lagoon 2 (2 - 3 feet deep suitable for steering courses etc)

Part three the lake proper (Quite deep...)

It's got to be done!!!!

Campsite would be usefull.

You could market this as "EXTREME MAYHEMING" or "HARDCORE"

I am sure it would not detract from the meeting in May.

Hi Stavros,

Great work, lake looks great.
Do you have any links to the park / lake?

What sort of dates are YOU thinking of Stav?
What clubs can we get to support it?

Martin.

Thats an excellent aerial photo at the link provided by Martin.  Note - Lyn Padarn is the larger of the two lakes shown.  (The other, Lyn Peris can be seen to have VERY steep banks and is unuseable)
The Padarn Country Park complex is at the right hand upper part of the lake and the two "lagoons" can be clearly seen. ( We normally sail from the other side of the lake at the green area next to the place with a white footpath alongside the water. From there we can go all the way along to the right and up the stream clearly shown. That end of the lake is also accessible from the Country Park area.)

Its North Wales.  In the mountains.  By a reservoir.  Rain is what they fill the reservoirs up with.  Take a big sou'wester.  Enjoy.

Right an update havign spoken to the relevant authorities they have said no problem Whit the event being run at the country park, they are keen to have us there.local clubs have Been contacted and I am waiting for them to reply etc. Campsites and B+B will shortly be given Robert Davies is goign to sort that out for me so bear with us on this one as it is early days!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right there will be some simple rules to be observed but nothing heavy as it is a FUN FUN FUN AND EVEN MORE FUN WEEKEND,well it has got to be with me in charge yes I will be the one causing MAYHEM that weekend.

Rules
1 Ins MUST BE  shown to the organisers
2 No IC on the lake at all as it is  SSI
3 Frequency controll will be adhered to
4 If I say NO to anything well NO is NO(unless of course cash is involved then It might be yes ;))

And that is it on rules unless I think of anything else of course

The weekend as far as I acn see will be a FUN one with me PREFERABLY not having a nervous breakdown.
Steering course in the shallowest of the 2 lagoons and tug towing
Springer races and football
Free sailing in the furthest lagoon
Free sailing in the main lake

An evening sail organised by Ghost on the otherside of the lake in the lagoons(contact him not me,his idea,he volunteered)

There is plenty to do for the wife's,girlfriend etc within 10 miles of LLanberis either shopping in Caernarfon or Bangor and LLandudno is only 20 miles away. So come on lets have some fun in Norht Wales, alas the only thing I cant arrange is the weather but who can.
