Anyone been mad enough?
« on: February 19, 2018, 02:26:36 pm »

Has anyone fitted a jet engine to a model boat? The model aircraft industry "American" produce miniature jet engines for aircraft and helicopters, they work identical to the real thing including the sound  :}  they cost a few grand and I don't know which would be the best way to steer them, or what speed they could do, but an interesting project, at least I think so, :P  but I'm a bit weird, so the doc keeps telling me. In short the answer is yes. There was a fellow at the Windermere Regatta some years ago, with more money than sense I suspect, who had fitted a gas turbine engine into a power boat. It went quite well until it took off, literally, and landed upside down in the lake. It was then realised that the aerofoil that was fitted to the back of the boat was shaped like an aircraft wing rather than the reverse.

Haven't seen him since.

Going back a few years this one but there are a few other videos of it on you tube. I'm sure I saw this at one of the Beale Park show's of old.

A "model" of K7, called "K777" has been built, but since its 1:1 scale, is it really a model?

Thanks for the videos, it seems that it has already been done, thanks for some "local" suppliers of engines. I will do some research so perhaps a project for next year. Thanks again for the input  :-)) :-)) FF

I prefer the sound of this Humber tug, sounds more like an old Deltic diesel train when it get going. (wait for it to exit river Hull onto river Humber)

Great stuff. Is there an official speed record for a model boat?

Dave.

there are but they are usually for tethered hydro's and are listed [ or were] in the Guinness book of records.

Here you can see Joerg's latest record from last year - he was even better than 2016!   click here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRxEuTfIqso

He is a member of our model club but I did not see his models in reality so far as our club pond is too small for such models. He told me that the bearings of the shaft only last for one run and have to be replaced then - incredible.

Both the Fast Electric and 'offshore' modellers hold annual Speed Record meetings in the UK.  Check out the MPBA web site.
