Al Khubar
« on: March 03, 2018, 05:31:53 pm »

Hi all

About 3 years ago I purchased Model Slipways Al khubar, tug boat. I found this kit difficult and basically made a dogs dinner of it. i think the main problem is I was expecting everything to fit perfectly and I did go at it like a bull in a china shop. Subsequently this partly constructed kit got put in the attic and forgotten about, well not entirely, I have since tried to rectify my mistakes, again using the touch of a cab horse, after which, again back to the attic. Fast forward to the present and after reading T33cno Portgarth build, it's back down from the attic, this time I will be asking for help and advice from the kind folk on this forum. first question I cut the slots for the deck drainage, or should I say hacked. I need to restart this, is it possible for me to refill these holes and start again. One idea, after reading Portgarth build, he lines the inside of the hull with plasticard, would it be possible to do this and then fill the gaps with P38 or some other suitable material, thus giving me after a lot of work a blank canvas to start the process from the beginning. Can I also add I am new to Boats/Ships and do not understand a lot of the lingo that goes with maritime, so bear with me if I do not understand at times.

Thank you
Carl

Welcome, and the best advise can be - Patience - the old adage - mark twice, cut once is also a good one, if you are able to add a couple of photo's then those who know better would be able to advise on a way to make repairs.

Planning what you want to do is better than playing by ear, many a time I have started to do a bit on a build and spend 80% of the time thinking about how to go about doing it.

If you have pictures that will help - remember the picture size needs to be less than 300MB per picture - say 900 x 900 pixels or at least less than a 1000 pixels as a guide (save the picture to a desktop and look at its properties).

Hi Carl,

I note you are in Sheffield.  I do not know where, but Balne Moor MBC will not be too
far away from you.  We are off the A19 between Doncaster and Selby.  Whilst we have
various types of scale boats in the Club we do specialise in tugs. Why don't you come along to an event of ours and see.  You can even have a go with a tug.  Bring you model along, there will be someone prepared to have a look and offer advice.  Our next event is 8th April. Andy (T33CNO) is a member, so you may get to see his Portgarth when it is finished.

Please though do not get disheartened about your ability.  This is a hobby, it's supposed to be fun.  Looking at your wash ports, they did not look too bad and a little fettling with a small file might have been all that was needed.  Don't let best be the enemy of good - I've been there, believe me!  Ask me who made three wheelhouses for an Ormesby Cross and still used the first one!
I have doubts about you P38 idea.  Andy's way of putting plasticard on the inside of the bulkheads
is a tried and tested technique but I'm not sure that P38 would shape a cleanly when you reshape the ports.
Maybe see you in April?

Michael

Yes, what we call "the wife's car" is a 1952 80" Series 1 Land Rover.  It looks just like my avatar and was registered in September of that year (which technically makes it a 1953 model) to Lord Howard of Glossop at his Knightsbridge address.
The Land Rover never lived there though.  It worked on his Yorkshire estate, Carlton Towers near Selby.
In 2012 it featured in a Japanese TV documentary about Royal patented products.

I also own a 1967 series 2 hybrid, but that's a whole different story.

You're right that it is not a subject for this part of the forum, but there is a section for other hobbies and interests.
I'll put some pictures of the series one there when I break her winter hibernation next month.

Hi all

as i can't make any progress on the hull, I treated myself to a cutting mat, (should have bought one years ago), and thought I would get on with some of the deck items, I think they've turned out OK so far. Michael, I am now on duty on the 8th, I was originally on rest day and was planning to come to the event, when is the next one?, pictures of progress so far.

Nowt really wrong with the washports - it is a tug after all and they get knocked about something chronic!!

And as for the deck parts - very tidy modelling from what I can see.

As has been said - take your time, be patient and work methodically.  Building model boats is not a race - it is purely for your own enjoyment!!!

Hi Carl,
Our next event after the 8th April is 13th May. That is a scale sailing event, but should be a good opportunity to see a range of different types of model.  If you can make another weekend sooner PM me with the dates and I'll try make arrangements to meet you at the pond as an alternative.

As the other Carl has said your new work looks good :-))

I suppose it makes a change from your father's yacht.  Lucky for some!

General Club access to the pond is Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday, so by mutual agreement it can be any of those.  Chances are on the day it will be we two!  With sufficient warning I can make most days.

Hi Carl,

Yes, 21 April is possible for me.

I could meet you at the pond at about 11.00 if that's OK?

Have to walk two German Pointers first!  Directions to the pond are on the website - link below.

Michael.

Hi Michael

that sounds like a plan to me, I will be touch closer to the date if that's OK.

I've been doing a little bit more recently, bit of touching up still to be done, but I 'am pleased with the results, not exact copy's, see what you all think.

Hi all

visited Balne MBC today, where I was greeted by Michael and his wife, thanks for your time Michael and the advice you gave, all taken on board and I will be back for more, unfortunately I won't be able to attend the meeting on the 10th June, i am on duty, sat and sun nights, that week end, I will look at the calendar of events and see which I can attend.

Progress is progress! The Al Khubar is a great model, I had one a few years ago and it's an enjoyable build and even better on the water. Looking forward to seeing more.

As said above, it's good to see you making progress.

I'll look forward to seeing you stretching it's legs at Balne Moor at some point in the future :-))
