Kept on carving and sanding.
Then I applied a liberal coating of Wood Filler.
Needed to wait 48 hours for it to dry,so I turned my attention to cladding the boiler.
Then sanding - sanding - sanding.
Not done yet, more sanding and filling to go.

Looking better and better Jim. I always take a childish delight in spraying on the first coat of primer which transforms the rather messy collection of filler and wood (and the occasional blood stain  :embarrassed: ) into a smooth, sleek boat hull. Enjoying your build!

Thanks for the encouragement.
I have completed the sanding/filling/sanding/filling/sanding.
The instructions call for multiple layers of sanding sealer to
waterproof the hull.  I have decided to fiberglass it.

1.  I am not real comfortable with how well I may have closed up all the gaps.2.  If I glass the inside, I still have a potential for a lot of water soaking the hull from the outside.
So I asked a fellow clubmember to help me - (I have never done this either)
He is a submariner, and fiberglasses his sub hulls (they sink - but under his control)
and we are getting together this weekend.

I'll post more when we do this.

Jim

So -  What color scheme to use to paint it?
The Chimaera had two lives (at least)  When first launched in 1901she was the private yacht of the commodore of the Southampton Yacht Club.
In 1917 she was sold to Barry Pilots to ferry pilots to and from ships.
As a working vessel she has been portrayed much like the working vesselsshown earlier in this log.  Black with red anti-fouling below the waterline.
But during her life as a private yacht, what color would she have been?
I am thinking perhaps white?
What color below the waterline?
Any thoughts?
Thanks for reading.Jim

I assume that in 1901 the Commodore of the Southampton Yacht Club was the Marquis of Ailsa . The current Marquis has a new yacht design on the board. I wonder if the colour is a repeat of Chimaera ?  Perhaps drop him a line and ask him.

As a point of interest the steam Yacht Andrea built by the Marquis yard (Ailsa Shipbuilding Co) launched 1897 must be Chimaera's sister ?

The Chimaera was launched on April 20, 1901 from the Woolston Yard of Mordey & Carney.
The original owner was Colonel the Honorable H.G.L.Chrichton commodore of the Royal Southern Yacht Squadron. Now the Royal Southern Yacht Club in Southhampton.
She was purchased by Barry Pilots in 1918.

A FAVOR - From this side of the pond, my searches pull up limited information. If anyone can find out anything related to her, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
I am still thinking over the color, but we have to glass the hull first.

I think you have pulled up a lot more information than I have been able to discover over here, and I have been looking for a long time as I have 2/3 of a John Hemmens kit for the Chimaera which I want to get round to sometimes. Only things I have been able to unearth are

The yard was then idle until the yacht building firm, J.G. Fay and Co of Northam, Southampton, expanded their business and took over the Woolston yard in 1897. That venture was also financially unsuccessful, so J.G. Fay and Co sought joint ownership with Mordey Carney and Co. in 1899.

Colonel the Hon HGL Crichton owned Netley Castle which is just up the road from the shipyard.

In June 1904 John I. Thornycroft & Company relocated to Woolston from Chiswick where it acquired the shipyard from Mordey Carney and Co..[3]

I don't know if worth pursuing but the county council for Barry ( Vale of Glamorgan Council) hold on record:-

Barry Pilotage Authority, 1889-1974 DXSS/1-13, DX892  The Record Office holds the records relating to the Barry Pilotage Authority,

I started the glassing of the exterior, working under the excellent tutelage of my fellow model maker.
Using resin and hardener from West Systems.  3 oz. cloth.  I see a lot more sanding in my future.Cleaning up the outside, and then moving on to the inside for placement of anchors for the steam plant. Then primer and paint.

Here are some more pics.
Baldrick,
I emailed the Royal Southern Yacht Club.
We will see if they respond with any information.

Jim

More Sanding - getting the hull to the point where I can
start working with filler/sandable primer.

Switching back to the insides.
Finished the mounts for the Boiler and Engine. And built a Condenser Tank.

Finally re-positioned the whistle - at least until the deck goes on
and I see how things line up.
More to come -

 Bonjour James,

I have the same steam machine in my tug "Vient de Loin" and have discovered a problem with the position of the oil lubricator. It is is front of the steam flow and does not operate. I changed it and put one between the boiler and the machine to solve it.

Raphael,
I understand your concern.  I have had this engine for a couple of years now,and was a skeptic at first that the position of the oiler was wrong.
But I find oil in the condenser, and water in the tank of the oiler, so something seems to be working.

I did experiment at first with how many turns to open the needle valve.
---------------------
As to my build, I am now working on the layout of the RC componentsand setting up linkages.

Next I need to get the oil tube attached to the driveshaft-stuffing tube.and move on to glassing the interior of the hull.

More to come -
Thanks for reading.

Jim.....I think it's all in the translation from Raphael  :o

Clearly you will get wetted & condensed oil in the de-oiler, however I understand most steam throttle/regulators function is protected with the same mist of oil if the lubricator is installed in the steam line just before the steam throttle/regulator

Derek,
If there is oil in the Condenser Tank (on the exhaust side)
I am assuming that the oil is making it thru the engine, which would include the steam throttle.

Is this not true?

Yes Jim, absolutely true.
When I run my St Tug which has a D10 engine  I only open the oil lubricator needle 1/4Turn which is more than enough for the engine.
I have seen people emptying condensate from the oil collector which is heavy with oil and a complete waste of oil.

Keep up the good work,

George.

I continued to work on the mounts for the Steam Plant and RC Servos.
Then I removed them at start glassing the interior of the hull.
While that is drying, I touched up the cladding on the boiler,Then I painted the Condenser tank.
Finally I insulated all the steam lines.
Letting it all dry overnight.

added another layer of epoxy,
Then I added some additional heat shielding for the area around the burner.

Need to let it all cure for a day.

Heat shielding for the area around the burner is a very good idea. I had one Launch which sprung a leak in the gas line which then caught fire. It was directed at the side of the boat and burned half way through the side before we recovered it. A gas shutoff valve is also a good idea.
