A bit of cabinet making
« on: March 16, 2018, 09:08:04 am »

This is what I have been playing with in recent months. All to bring some sanity to the mess in the kitchen.
SWMBO needs furniture, before anything else, but at least I get to buy tools.

Thanks Stavros,

The veg rack looks smaller than it really is in the picture above. Here is another picture to show the size, as you know, SWMBO is not that large herself. But there is plenty of room for all the spuds, and every thing else.

And there is the master builder part - if we cannot see the flaws, what flaws - if it is a flat pack assembly item it has a multitude of flaws - if we don't see them there is not really any flaw.

Many, many years ago we visited an art gallery in Mooloolaba which displayed some unique furniture by a real craftsman.   Some of the cabinets took him a year to make.  All solid timber from local woods.   No copying others designs but drawers that opened in unusual ways and some that had to be opened in sequence.
I have never seen the like since.   I just wish we could have afforded a piece.  <:(

@BrianB6
Is there any chance that there is a Website for the gallery? Who knows the pieces you saw, or later pieces may have found their way back.

I have sent an email to the gallery and await a reply.

I have just finished 2 of 4 of these 6 drawer chests. I will finish the other two this week.
I have used traditional construction methods. No metal drawer slides in these.
It has taken me about 5 months of part time effort.
SWMBO is a happy bunny.

OK very nice indeed TT :-)) ...we'll make a Chippie of you yet  O0

Are there two each of different designs?

No metal, but any composite materials [nylons] in the slides?

In the finished pair, all very symmetrical grain patterns, what is the face timber on the front of the draws?

Four of the same design, but one has slightly different handles.
The slides are beech wood and beeswax for lube. All wood, wax, screw (lost count( and glue, and dowel (over 300) and glue,. The finish is a wood wax-oil.
Any symmetry is coincidental, the drawer fronts are 8" (200mm) 1" thick pine planking put through a thickness planer and trimmed to width. The guts of the thing and face frames and tops are cut from 120x22x4000 cheapo pine boards. The tops are four edge glued boards.
I have left over a lot of long thin battens . I realise now that a lot of traditional garden furniture is made from scrap strip wood. I used to think of all the wasted kerf when I saw plans for garden tables, but now I see it is just random waste wood, and I will use my scrap for garden projects.
By using really cheap softwoods, that have changed shape in a short few month since my primary cuts, I have learned a lot about the nature of wood. Having used a lot of new (to me) techniques I on low quality woods, I am now confident enough to move on to hardwoods without fear of wasting money trashing good material.

At the moment I am making projects from the scrap bin. As you can imagine I had a lot of off-cuts from the chests of drawers and other projects. I was also given a pile of strip wood that is getting used up.

Not strictly cabinet making, this one.
When we had a break in the weather, last month, I finally got around to fixing the garden gate. The old original gate was a basic steel gate put in by the house developers. Ugly, rusting, and one side had jammed and then fallen off of the wall. When we cut the other gatepost off of the wall, we found that there was nothing behind the steel box girder that was placed in the wall. So we had to relocate the gate to where there was still solid brick, and then patch the holes. This also meant I had to repaint the wall, but it was overdue a lick of paint anyway.

My friend Phil is very like you TT. he has made items for their kitchen before now and like you makes the supreme effort. He created low profile drawers from the kick boards of kitchen cabinets to store tins and juice cartons. He traditionally used softwoods but is now dabbling with hardwoods (I can think of no better excuse than to visit my local hardwood supplier 'Yandles' when he comes down for the weekend!) It is very satisfying to whittle wood.

Those pieces you have made are brilliant TT. Before long you will be building model boats like Brian B in Australia  :}

Well I finally got around to finishing the mudroom today. I started the design last summer (June-July). Started the project properly in December, then my table saw broke, then the holidays, then the shutdowns. I think the saw was fixed in April, and work began again. With family commitments it has taken me until now to finally, finally, finish. Phew! That is the last of the main projects for the house.

I was thinking about doing a Murphy bed for the study. Currently I have a large bookcase, printer shelves, large desk, and sofa bed that rolls out so that the feet are just under the desk. Because the study is small, If I put a Murphy bed in not only would the sofa bed go, but I would have to get a much smaller desk, and maybe even get rid of the printer shelves. The Murphy bed project was canned.
For a medium or larger sized room that needs to be dual purpose a Murphy bed is great and allow you to maximize space, and maybe even turn a larger bedroom into a second lounge. In a studio apartment it gives you the ability to have guests stay over and not have to sleep on the sofa. For a smaller room like I had in mind, the end result might be an otherwise empty, or minimally furnished, room that occasionally can be used as a bedroom.
