1900 era anchor and tow hook

(1/2) > >>

steve mahoney:
Does anyone have any reference of the types of anchors and tow hooks that would have been used on British tugs around 1900. The tug is harbour tug, about 85ft LOA, built 1905.
The anchor was the sort that was stowed on the deck and dropped over the side I.e. no anchor well.

Thanks. Steve

Thanks Brian, some likely looking sorts in there, just need some reference for an old style tow hook now.
Were they just a hook attached to the bulkhead or did they have release mechanisms?
Any ideas anyone?

JimG:
Just had a quick look through British Steam Tugs by P.N. Thomas for info.Difficult to know for certain as many of the drawings are not dated but it appears that by 1900 most hooks have release mechanisms and are arrange to swivel. There were several different designs of hook over the years.
