I tend to do a lot of building at the weekends, then ponder what i have achieved during the week, then adapt, redo or accept the following weekend

Hi Kevin,

Welcome to the forum, and what a way to introduce yourself! I am enjoying your build log and appreciate the mixture of scratch built, Printed and Fibreglass parts. I expect the launcher would have been a long project in it's own right if scratch built. Is the printing medium a stronger material to fend off light bonks and bashes?

I look forward to your next instalment  :-))

I am enjoying your built. She is huge. I work in 1/48th and can not imagine what she would be like there. Your Sea Slug launcher is spectacular. #D printing is making such a huge leap forward in this hobby, expensive, but the results are worth it. Great build, great effort, and she'll be an impressive best on the water.

Good morning everyone

Thank you for the comments

i doubt that my build will ever see water, and there are several reasons for this

at 83" long she will not fit in my car plus any cradle will make her longer

i have used MDF to build the structure up, and even though covered it would very quickly get damp, and heavy

BUt i have left open the opportunity that once completed i or someone could convert her to a water based build, after all the she will need some sort of running gear, just to be seen as a shelf mounted build

the launcher its self if held correctly is quite strong, i think it would be quite easily damaged if something was to knock it

electrics

Bulkhead lights

i would like to put quite a lot into the build so as to learn what i can/cannot do, i am still learning how to solder, but everything i have done still works

having said that the bulkhead lights, bought from fleetscale  are not designed for what i want them for, in this this photo i drill, filed the backs of them out and glued them over a hole which contained a led, but as you can see there is a lot of escaping light, so the way ahead will be to make my own castings from resin and put a led directly into the resin (watch this space)

hanger lighting

i have done several attempts at this, and non of it is very pretty so will be done again, infact the whole of the hanger will perhaps have to be remade as it is a very tight fit to get the hanger roof on properly

finishing the main superstructure, apart from the bridge area
rightly or wrongly, i made the choice to build in mdf with a plastic covering, having made a mock up of everything in card, so it was a simple copying exercise wasnt it , WRONG, copying is fine if the card version was correct, this is where i found the plans very frustrating, the lines are very thick, to much detail is shown which hides detail that needs to be seen, so a few times the dremmel came out to change things

NOT MY PHOTO but shows the area that had to be corrected

Early February 2018

at this stage most of the superstructure was in place and with a covering of plastic, the exception being the bridge module

i hope i have not missed any thing out, and if i have i have a full diary of everything done and happy to answer any questions

Deatailing

Hanger

yes there is some artistic licence, i have phots from the CCD site  http://countyclassdestroyers.co.uk/
but of the 8 hulls built, then split into 2 batches, they all had there own differences,

this after bulkhead was one of the big visual differences,  the tower on the right was only fitted to Fife, and was a replenishment at sea tower rig

hanger doors

i am having to learn lots of new ways of doing things, making grill and vents

the small vents come from a lovely gentleman who owns a company called modelling timbers http://www.modellingtimbers.co.uk/1.html

unfortunately he is packing up due to ill health

simulated non slip on the quarterdeck

the thought of doing this really put me off and kept finding ways to avoid it, but once i started it was quickly hooked and may have over done it

I have used them a lot . very good . Wire is a nightmare as its so small to see at at 0.5mm dia . I find two in series with a 5k ohm resistor works well on 12v

good evening everyone

thank you for the messages and comments

the Bridge was to be my last big module to complete, and i messed it up, the plans show two lower middle windows, but these were moved/hidden because of the Exocet blast defectors being in the way, just where they were moved to was where the module supports were, so i did not get a decent cut on them, so will either have to redo, or make them slightly larger

Hi Kevin

That’s all part of the fun! For a few years on one of our projects we didn’t know about a window on our Walton ASRL until a very clear photo was provided in a magazine which changed everything. We ended up rebuilding the superstructure but only because it was rubbish- it was a first model from 13 years ago!
