Tug towing and Scale sailing at Balne Moor 8th April
« on: March 28, 2018, 12:18:25 pm »

Morning Folks,

There will be a tug towing and scale sailing event at Balne Moor on Sunday 8th April. The tug tow will be for teams of two, so this is your chance to team up with another tugger to sail a vessel through a set course or to steer your own boat through an obstacle course. Entry costs will be £1 per entrant for tug towing or £1.50 for a scale boat.  Events will kick off at about 10.30.

Hopefully there will be no intervention by the weather like last time <*<

The usual catering will be available on the day.  We look forward to meeting old friends and welcoming new visitors.  You coming to this one Martin? :-))

The Club website has details of where we are and how to find us, just follow the link below.

Spud, are you coming on Sunday?

What’s the tariff for a day pass - is it two slices of carrot cake or lemon drizzle?

Hope to see you and lots of other old (I use the word advisedly) friends at what has become the first event of the season, thanks to the Beast from the East.

I am looking forward to coming along.

Not currently a tug owner but keen to see some tugs in action.

Just hope the weather is kind to us.

I had a look at a couple of Johns tugs last Saturday very impressive it will be good to see them on the water.

   Hi Mike,
We'll be there with the Pegasus and Steve's Anita C hopefully the weather will be better than it was in Glentrool last week on the motorbikes, it was cold and rained every day. The journey back on Saturday was awful 2c with a wind chill of -6 and to top it all my heated grips decided to play on/off all the 215 miles home! still that's what you get for riding motorbikes. See you sunday.
        Cheers, Pete. :-)) :-)) :-))

It will be great to meet you Bill and I'm sure there will be a chance for you to try one of the tugs.  Who knows you might get the Tug Bug :}

Hi Pete, it will be great to see you Guys again.  The forecast for Sunday is for 14 degrees centigrade and perhaps the occasional shower, so positively tropical by recent standards. :-))

I have always liked Tugs, my last dip into model boating was Thames Sailing Barges when living in Essex, Tugs were not particularly popular. Now back up North it will be great to get involved.

EVENT CANCELLED

I'm not sure I believe this, but we've had to cancel another event.

We might have avoided the beast from the east this time, but we've been inundated with rain to the point the pond is flooded such that an event would not be safe.  The launch banks are under water.  We are really sorry, but it would just be too dangerous.

This event last year was blessed with wonderful warm sunshine, what a difference a year makes.

Our next event is on 13th May,  that is listed as a joint MPBA/BMMBC event; more details of the format nearer the date

I've been to check things this morning.  The walkway is about 6" below the water.

We've been the victim of flood defences elsewhere in the area which dump excess water in the stream next to our pond preventing our pond to drain off.

Thanks Jason.

Like many Clubs we rely on the income from events to top up our funds.
We've now lost two events so far this year.  Let's hope there are not any more!

It's also very disappointing not to be able to sail, but short of throwing our models at the pond it would be just about impossible to launch a boat.  Even when the water goes down there will be a lot of sludge to scrape off the walkways before they are safe.

It is annoying but inevitable that we suffer from a generally low lying site. The Water Authority has to manage the drains in the area, but we do suffer from their actions <*<

Hi Martin,

13th May.

That though is unusual in that it is a joint event with the MPBA. It is a scale steering competition for two sizes of boat.  It has to be said though that we have not been overrun with entries so we may be rethinking the format.

On 27th May we have a Tugs and Navy Day, but I know that clashes your Wicksteed event

Great shame that the event has been cancelled.
I sympathise with all the committee as cancelling events can be so down hearting.
If you are planning a clear up day why not post it on here.
I for one have added your next event to my diary and hope to meet up with you then.

Thanks Bill,

Here's a photo of the pond side today.

The good news, as you can see, is that the level is now back below the walkways. If we could be sure things will settle down we could clean off and "Bob's your uncle".

Unfortunately the valve which sends the water our way is there to protect the east coast mainline.  I'm sure that if there's any chance of aquaplaning trains we'll be back under water >>:-(

We're going to have to wait a little longer to be sure.  We've also discovered there is a rather large otter creating havoc in the other ponds.  Hey Ho!

Sorry,... is that a club house? Did you guys get a club house?  :o

Is there no high water drain large enough to accammodate the additional influx of water?

We've always had a clubhouse.  Our Chairman painted it last year, so maybe it is now more visible :} ?

There is a drainage system for the pond, but it discharges into a drain which itself becomes overwhelmed when the sluice near the railway is opened.  It is the product of a generally low lying area and a lot of rain.

It has been worse.  If you look at the photo and imagine the water at the door of the clubhouse - it did happen some years ago.

  Hi Umi.
Michael ' explained part of our problem but there is a little more, If the local river is high  (the river Went ) this is the River our drain runs into, when high it will not except the water from our drain so it backs up and hay Ho there you have it. But at the moment the river is falling so that is good news.
