"Vulcan" and "Concorde" both powered by RR "Olympus" engines, different variants, but basically the same, I like to look at "Concorde" as a passenger carrying "Vulcan". O0  FF

As a kid living near Bristol we regularly saw a Vulcan with a Concord motor strapped underneath for testing. It spent a lot of hours around the Bristol Channel.

As I remember it the Vulcan & Concorde both had Olympus engines but those in the Vulcan did not have reheat & were thus much quieter giving 21000lbs thrust compared to those in Concorde which gave around 38000lbs.

The Vulcan remains one of the most beautiful and jaw dropping aircraft of all time.

I was amazed to see a Concorde still sitting on the apron at Heathrow a few weeks ago.

The thing Neil saw was probably one of these:

I still go by the old "UFOs are not dangerous. People who see them are."

I saw a B2 coming in to land at Yeovilton in August 2013. I was in the casting room and heard what I thought was a hot air balloon firing and popped out expecting to see a coloured blob stealing a picnic hamper and instead saw a black triangle passing alongside the farm complex.

Definitly a noisey machine.

Well,......not loud & not really scary....................late November 1978 .....Perth airport seated in a window seat of a Frokker F28...awaiting departure to the north [Dampier]

At the end of the outboard runway...a large grey shadow slowly landed & blocked the sunlight..........grey fuselage much taller than the Frokker....no visible markings........this inbound aircraft came to a halt at the extremity of the runway......immediately all of the cockpit windows became silver like what we now know as LCD

A few days later, on the news some footage was shown of American B52 bombers landing in Perth..................

Very big....very grey...no visible markings   :o

A couple of years ago I was on a Virgin 747 over New York - everyone was eating lunch, I was looking out the window where if I pressed my face against the window, I had a huge field of view. Being an aircraft nerd, I was watching all the other aircraft above & below us crossing in the air corridors in that really busy airspace.
Suddenly, whoooosh - a white 737 went past us in the opposite direction, exactly the same altitude, so close that if it wasn't slightly banked, our wingtips would have clipped - so close I could clearly see all the rivets on the plane, the faces in the windows, the position of the control surfaces etc - looking at the B52 photo above, the 737 would have been between the B52 and the window of the photograher.
I got up and quietly told the stewerdess who contacted the captain - who replied that the other aircraft had been 'at least a mile away'.

I have the image clearly in my head and it still bothers me whenever I fly.

Not Frightening, but noisy!
Just after and slightly to Starboard
of a Phantom on the cat on Ark
winding up for GO.
Bit closer than the average guy at an
airshow or civil airport.

In many years of attending, and participating in, military air shows the best aircraft for noise, power, and frightening the kids has got to be the Lightning.
In 1975, in the middle of my military career, I went to the Lakenheath Air Show and for the first time saw the F-16. It re-wrote the rules on how aircraft flew and manoeuvred. At that time the things it did were unbelievable.

Do the old remember of the sound of the Concorde in the take-off?

I used to hear it daily on the morning and evening flights........lived in a pub called "The Bell" at a little village called Waltham St Lawrence in Berkshire, and taught woodwork in maidenhead 1978 - 1980...........the pub was right under the flight path of outward bound flights from Heathrow............she had an ear splitting raucous sound far louder than any aircraft at the time.

but the first time I heard her was when her test pilot, [Trubshaw??] flew her over Blackpool on a "show and tell"....I was sat outside the Motor test centre waiting for a mate whom I had taught to drive took his driving test..........the examiner stopped the car at a certain point and got out himself to watch the Concorde fly over............leaving my mate with motor running sitting unaccompanied in the car........needless to say, he passed his test, lol.

picture..........my home for two years................used to rattle every morning and evening when Concorde flew over.

she was a very cramped aircraft inside.........I remember flying to the Isle of Man many years ago in a Douglas Dakota dc3 and she reminded me of that plane.................never flew in her, but as a job, a guy who was a regular in the pub, asked me as a foreigner if I could build a kitchen bar structure in his house, with built in hob n cupboards........he was a security officer at Heathrow, and as a "treat" when I'd finished the bar he took me to Heathrow and onto the plane as a bit of a thank you.........cockpit and seating area........was great......even sat in the pilots seat...........but sadly no camera allowed..........but a fantastic experience I'll never forget.

I lived 6 months in 2 km of the end of the trunway of Airport Roissy Charles de de Gaulle, this plane moved plates in the cupboards of the kitchen

& as it was Air France it was on remould tyres - which I understand in conjunction with a bit of metal left on the runway caused the disaster.

My story goes back a few years, summer and late, around 12am or later, we had had a BBQ and the chiminea embers were glowing nicely, sat having a fag when I heard a boom...boom...boom. Now this was high above and I instinctively looked up to try and source it. There was no cloud cover and I saw a couple of telltale aircraft lights in the distance but this sounded different...then I spotted it.

I saw three vapour circles high up and a slight vapour trail leading to, what I thought was a aircraft as it was moving, no lights visible on said object, I pondered and thought it could have been a meteor entering the atmosphere at just the right angle and it caused sonic booms but to be honest no idea.

I worked in West Slough for a period in the mid '90s and Concorde used to fly directly over my workplace on take-off out of Heathrow. Brilliant sound. Everything stopped for those seconds as it went over with everyone looking out the windows to see the afterburners.

None of you ever hear the Vulcan flying over  with the test engine strapped to its belly attached not to mention a couple of weeks before the  France disaster she'd  just passed over Bristol regular time and was heading over the estuary when she dropped like a stone  tremendous noise lot of smoke   sharp climb then back the other way . Never saw or heard any mention of it in the media
