Brittle old plastic

Has anybody got any advice on the best way to repair cracks in old plastic boat moldings.

What sort of plastic - or do you mean glassfibre?

Its just like blown plastic molds not glass fibre
The boat is about 30 years old

If it's polystyrene, I use liquid poly and very thin plasticard to make sticky plasters on the inside over the split. It will split again elsewhere if it's gone really brittle.

Often it is internal chemical disintegration so no practical long term remedy.

I agree. It may be on its way out but as long as no pressure is put on it, Plastic's technique is sound.


Old white styrene that has effectively perished is of no use and I chuck it away rather than risk poor work by using it. The savings are not worth the hassle of rebuilding masters that have ruptured  <:(
