Better Video of One Twelfth Severn
« on: April 06, 2018, 08:26:19 am »

I know I just posted a vid but this was such a lovely day at a lovely lake I just have to share it.
The Video is a bit long but you dont have to watch it all.
My leak issues were gone and the boat stayed bone dry inside.
I am really pleased with the way the boat goes but it is a big thing to handle. There is a clear risk of damaging it moving and carrying. I think there is a clear need to make some kind of trolley to move it on as squeezing through doorways carrying it puts it at risk.
I got about 40 minutes sailing with two 5 cell 5000 mah batteries with the type of running that the video shows. Not long enough when things are going well so just ordered another two batteries.

what motors are you running in the Severn, les, as it has good scale speed and 40 minutes from 10amps is pretty good in my mind..........I run twin 555 type motors in my classic lifeboats and from a 4amp/h sla battery get around 60 minutes from one battery before they "fall off the cliff" in F1 parlance.....and they are about 10 inched smaller and only half your speed............

a good running time in my opinion.

The motors are Emax BL4030/10. They are driving the 5 blade brass props that came with the Speedline kit.
Its early days, the video was the third sail and the first problem free but based on that sail I will be happy if thats how it shakes down for battery life.
My problem with the lipo batteries is because my hearing is terrible I cant hear the bleepers warning me the voltage is low. I wonder if there is a visual alarm sensor that you can get. I have wondered if it would be possible to add some circuitry to the sensors to flash an LED

I've put those motors in my Severn but I'm still a way of getting it ready for a sail, that's if it ever gets it bottom wet. Shame they are no longer available. What size are the props? My kit is a very old one and came with 65mm 4 blade props.

HobbyKing does a couple of low voltage alarms with LEDs.
