Quiet couplings
« on: April 12, 2018, 05:09:57 pm »

Sorry if I seem to have a lot of topic's open at the moment. But with this new pool of modelers to converse with it seems a shame not to fish for some of the answers that have eluded me recently.

Does anyone know if it is possible to buy just the center rubber section of this type of shaft coupling.

It is possible to buy the complete coupling from Germany but that will cost for about £25.00 including post on ebay.

I'm looking to buy four rubber pieces.

Ive never seen these listed for sale in any of the modelling shops I use such as Howes, Cornwall MB, MMB bits.
So they might only be available in Germany?
Are they special?

Cornwall model boats list them under Robbe couplings?  Could try them to see if the centre sections are available individually...

Thanks for the replies, I had one of these couplings in a boat about 35 years ago, when in good condition they are very strong, quiet and very easy to disconnect.
I give Cornwall models a bell.

robbe didn't sell it buy it self which was a pain. but it find someone that found a replacement and was able to cut it down and made about 4 bits from it. will try and find the link and share it.

found it https://www.walther-flender.de/en/drive-technology/couplings/

robbe used to do this alot and just reband stuff.

ie waterpumper volvo screen pump but charged 4x for it  %%

they do just the rubber part too. seen a few sites in the uk sell these but no prices sorry

bauer models  in germany  do the rubber centre piece  in different lengths to   http://www.bauer-modelle.com/epages/Bauer_Uwe46269592.sf/en_GB/?ViewAction=View&ObjectID=59207528&PageSize=36&Page=2

Thanks for the info, I've had a look at their web page. Their couplings differ from the one I pictured having twelve "splines" (if that word describes the pegs) compared to the eight pictured.

by the way the topic should been called "Quiet couplings" (it's not easy being an idiot) :embarrassed:

Thanks Ray

I think you've hit the spot. I think I hit post on the previous reply at the same time you sent yours.

And thanks to all for you support.

Now, to open a new topic, "Show us your lemons" I've just had a model delivered today and it left a sour taste in my mouth.

Most of my couplings are very very quiet as I use solid couplings....never a problem with alignment either

There's lots of good reasons to use these sort of couplings, Insulation, easy to adjust, easy to dismantle, reduction of vibration from outside influences, anti shock, and no moving parts. There are of course some down sides, costs, availability and most importantly they will not lock two interdependent shafts together axially without some form backing thrust and of course a thrust washer or bearing.

Got a small coupling on a small fast electric (about 150 watts) with a silicone rubber coupling. The hubs are pieces of delrin machined up to be a press fit on the shafts, and the silicone stretched over the hubs. No serrations or keys required, and runs perfect. No doubt there is a power limit for this type of coupling, but for most models it's spot on and it costs pennies if you have a lathe to machine the hubs. If not the huco/raboesch style brass hubs also work well with rubber tubing, but are much heavier.
