Balne Moor MBC Season's first sail 29th April
« on: April 19, 2018, 09:14:12 am »

Following our problems first with a frozen pond and then a flooded pond, we've yet to hold an event this year >>:-( .

We've decided to correct that by having an extra event on Sunday 29th April.  It will not be a competition, but will be an opportunity for people to try out the new layout of the pond.  As always there will be large tows on the water so you can try out tug towing.  There will also be a scale steering course. As always everyone is welcome to join us and have a go :-))

Activities will start at about 10.30.  Sat nav DN14 0ER and a full description of our location is on the website, follow the link below.

Hi Mike,
     That's really good news I will speak to the lads and see if we can make it over. It seems ages since we had a proper sail!
       Cheers, Pete.

Fingers crossed Pete!

We were at the pond on Wednesday and it is now looking really good.

The new layout of harbours is in place thanks to Eric and the water level is perfect for boat launching :-)) More importantly the water levels in the area are pretty much back to normal :} .

Just need to water test my winter build before Sunday O0

I'm going to swap my family commitments around so that I can attend, it will be good to see tugs and tows in action, I might even get hooked and find myself in the market for a TUG. John tempted me a few weeks ago. I am still thinking about his one will have to see if I enjoy towing first.

Yo Essex Bill,
     Great to hear you will go to the meeting  at Balne  moor you won't be disappointed! The people are so nice to meet and the butties are the real business! Visiting Balne  a few years ago was what got me into the tugs and towing malarkey. You will find a mountain of help and advice from the tug masters there, I just wish I lived nearer to the site.
     It's a 220 mile round trip for us Lancasrtrion folks but well worth the trip.
           Hope this helps.
     Cheers, Pete.

It's raining at the pond today, but no sign of any more flooding, so we're good to go on Sunday :-))

Looking forward to some good sailing and towing :}

Hi Spud, yes that is it.

The resizing seems to have foreshortened it a bit.  Here's another view which still looks a bit more dumpy than it really is.  It's freelance and has twin schottels in tractor formation.

For any Danish speakers, I am aware that it is called Svitzer Open Sandwich, but that's a bit of fun aimed at my Danish relatives :} .

I would love to see more of the model jetties, and land side works. If you post and I don’t respond straight away it is because I am on the road.

I'll be back at the pond on Thursday so I'll take more photos of the installations, perhaps without my boat posing in the foreground :}

Spud
I'm getting there Spud :-))
I'm used to tank steering so that much is OK. The schottels do swing almost 180 degrees so have a greater response.  It does also feel different having them slightly forward of midships, but it's very responsive. There's also no need for a bow thruster complicating things further.  I've got a Y lead for the schottels if I find them being independent just too much %%

  Greetings to Mike,Poll and all the guys n girls,
       Today we had (once again) a brilliant day although the weather could have been a bit kinder, its really worth the round trip from Southport for the hospitality and many thanks to the new kitchen crew full marks!
     Big thanks to Andy and Poll for the sarcasm/advice all noted but no excuses I was crap with the new tug. These Schottle thingys take some mastering especially when you are still on L plates with tank steering and don't forget the wind element. Looking forward to May but weather permitting we'll come over on the motorbikes then June with the car, by then I may (Jury is out) have improved with the Schottle malarkey. Thanks again folks.
      Kind regards, Pete. :-)) :-)) :-))

Thanks Pete,

A big thank you to all who attended today :-))

It was nice to catch up with old friends and to meet some new ones.

It just seems so strange that it has taken until the end of April to get things started this year.

Let's hope that sneaky wind does not trouble us next time.  Andy Kelley got the award for the "Nanook of the North lookalike" :}

I've got some photos to load up and so has John (Poll).

The next event is 13th May and I'll post more about that in the near future.
