Soldering Posts on Mtroniks 40a marine viper !!
« on: April 19, 2018, 09:39:55 PM »

Just received the mtroniks 40a marine viper speed controller and was quite surprised to see the battery and motor wires require soldering on to 'solder posts' , small posts with a blob on top !!
I've no problem identifying which wire goes where, but when it comes to soldering I am as green as they come !!
Any tips would be gratefully received.

HI having just checked the M troniks web site all the 40 amp vipers are pre wired. Some of the smaller units made many years  ago needed to be soldered 3 and 5amp units. Can we see a picture or give them a call  never seen a viper that was not pre wired.

Dave ...heads up  :-)) for acknowledging your soldering skill, but don't practice on the mtroniks 40a marine viper speed controller board

Do you have a mate with soldering kit & skills?....or are a member of a Boating Club?

I am sure either would assist for the swap of a large bottle of brown ale O0

Hi,
Thank you for the advice, I will try and add some pics.
I'm not a member of a club yet ! and I would like to give soldering a go.
The controller is definitely a 40a mtroniks marine viper just checked the mtroniks site manual and it does say some higher power versions come fitted with 'solder posts and loose wires.
DTB
Can't seem to get the pics on.
Perhaps the next step is a call / question to mtroniks.

Pre-tin your wires first. Add a bit of extra tinning to the speed controls posts. Then place the soldering iron on your wire on the post and feed a bit more solder in between the soldering iron and the top wire. Once this lot reaches temperature, the whole lot will rapidly flow with solder, job done, take the iron away.
If you run out of hands, a blob of Blu Tac will act as an extra hand to hold the wire a couple of inches from the solder job.

The new 40A Vipers are wired, but the older ones had posts. I have one in an S-boat.

HI All checked with Mtronicks this morning and they inform me this type of unit has not been made for a least 5 years. The next generation of vipers all came pre wired  for battery connections  and motor connections.

Hello to all,
Thank you for all the information, guidance and tips, which I have taken on-board :-)) .
The seller did say he had the controller for some time , but it had not been used , and that is why I got it at what I think was a bargain (25). :-)
Thank you Stan, for the invite to discuss the method required to do the job, sorry I was not able to make the call today due to grandad commitments :embarrassed: .
I will make a test bench unit and practice the technique until I'm confident enough to take on the controller.
I've got to start somewhere !! :-))
