Brass deck hinges
« on: June 01, 2018, 04:22:09 pm »

I'm trying to find all brass hinges, ordinary or piano type, for the deck hatches on my boat.

Open width 10-12 mm.

All I can find is plated ones, which rust too easily.

Thanks, That's my local model shop. I'm looking for solid brass, not plated.

You could have a look here:

Big range and they seem to distinguish between brass and brassed (plated)

I think you might have too. Brass is possibly too soft for a very thin working hinge, which is why they all seem to be plate. All of the solid brass hinges I see are fairly heavy in comparison with piano hinge.. For a model, where the forces used are very small, very thin brass should be OK. The other thing that will be hard to find are brass (not brassed) screws.

It would be good to see your work on this, I am sure others will be interested too.

What about stainless steel????

Also try DIY clock makers, such as Grandfather clocks for brass hinges.

So i've made my own all brass hinges.

This one has a 25mm drop to secure to inside of boat. Tube silver soldered to it, then milled out 3mm slots at 3mm intervals.  The hatch had the tube silver soldered to the top, milled out to match upright. Cleaned up with a square file. Brass rod inserted for the hinge.
