Ann letitia Russell lifeboat
« on: June 15, 2018, 09:19:55 am »

Hi folks, I have just purchased from a club member a full unopened kit of the Ann Letitia Russell.
In my mind a beautiful boat full of character. Any tips or advice would be gladly welcome or materials I may need that are not included in the D. Metcalf kit and authentic crew figures makers would be handy.
Before I start my building of the model.

Thank you in anticipation

Hi John
Mountfleet models do the correct 1:12 lifeboat men.

As for the Kit if it one with CNC routed 6mm  deck frames sheet then you should check with Dave as the first few kits had some cutting errors
and he has now done a fresh sheet.

If its a kit where the frames are printed then there are no issues at all.

Hope this helps

Regards

Derek

as the originals when I designed the kit in 1995...….the drawings were taken from each finished frame as I fitted to the hull in the position noted in the instructions...…….John......cut them precisely to the line and it will go like a dream jigsaw.

Hi Neil, thank you for your input, I will try and do your design proud.
What motors would you suggest? I have a couple of Beulers & 800 motors
Are they too big? Or would you go brushless as I have 2 950kv motors.
What props would you fit? Any help will be appreciated.

I feel very proud every time I see a model of the ALR...…..and never seen a bad one...…...but seen some absolute crackers...………...I wish dave would get on and finish and release the little Liverpool class I did for him 10 years ago.

as for motors....……..the buhlers are what I put in the original prototype and she worked well at a good scale speed...…...and that was also on the white metal propellers ...…...but plenty of people splash out on brass props of the same diameter.....but with the tunnels they don't make any difference to my thinking...…….but the choice is yours.  the tunnels actually restrict the top speed to a certain extent.

but if you put a 12v 7 amph battery in, the model will sail for a couple of hours on one charge at least......you'll get fed up before the battery gives out.

I certainly wouldn't go brushless with it though...…...would be a waste of them especially if you have two buhlers, and you wouldn't get the same run time...…….plus, if you use those, you'd have to put ballast into the hull, where as with a sla battery, the boat is self ballasting to waterline with no extra needed......

Thanks Neil,
Behulers it is then, I will be using brass props not white metal ones on my build though.
Once again Neil thank you for your help. I will try not to bother you with too many questions.

no mate...…..she's on a hard standing at Fleetwood under the auspices of being under restoration...……...only sadly the guy who is in charge of the restoration doesn't know a piece of MDF  from a plank of teak ………..I have little faith that whilst he is in charge, she will ever be restored, sadly.

Hi Niel, I e.mailed you earlier but then remembered you said you have had problems with mail
So I will post the question here.
The kit I bought from a club member was as received from Dave Metcalff and added to his
Collection. He never opened it. The thing is parts are missing, the one I am concerned about most
Is the bow fender, it's not in the kit. Do you know where I could source one or is there a contact
Number for Dave or is he unobtainable now due to retirement.

If you are looking for the rope bow fender there are plenty to choose from on eBay. I soaked mine in a strong tea solution to give it some colour. The ALR does make a lovely model and like Neil I would like to see DM release the long awaited Liverpool kit. I'd be at the front of the queue to buy one

the ann letitia russell is a nice kit which builds into a lovely boat. the tudor dolls house of lifeboats !  be aware there is lots and lots of cutting on the mouldings and  the printed wood sheets ,  your work shop will never be the same again  :}  understand dave as now cnc cut the 6mm and 3mm ply to make the build a tad easier.  enjoy your build.

Hi Typhoon, I am enjoying the build the only drawback have been the missing parts.
But that added a greater challenge. As I have had to turn or mould some parts as I
get on with the build making the kit build take longer to Finnish.
As for my workshop it has never been the same since I started making boats.
It's very similar to Neil's but with less tools. {-)

NOTHING but NOTHING can be similar to Neils workshop! He has dust in there so rare even that is of museum quality.
As for hidden (LOST) tools, some are probably so unique that Noah would have used them on his Ark.
Having said that, what finally emerges from that hallowed ground in the way of a model,is also out of this world.
See you at Blackpool my friend (if you still are by then lol)

Hi guys, re:- planking the canopys, the instructions say make the planking by drawing a
ballpoint pen down the printed page to simulate planking then cut down the middle
Of the lines to separate the planks.
Will the ink run when varnished or is it best to not bother with pen lines?
Don,t want to make a mess of a very delicate job.

john, I found at a later date to that when I did the ALR...……..the perfect way of cutting the planks at perfectly accurate widths...…...feed your paper through a desk shredder……...BUT MAKE SURE, that it is NOT  a cross cut shredder where it cuts both length and width at the same time...…...a shredder gives the exact width you need and perfect spacing...….I used that method on my Liverpool and my 2 Watsons and Barnett
