Prop tube supporting
« on: June 28, 2018, 09:46:29 am »

Might someone please tell me the procedure for aligning and securing of an A frame prop tube support to the hull.
Is the frame secured on inside or outside of hull?

Assuming that they are supports and not a decoration, through the hull, using the shaft as the alignment tool.  The blobs of epoxy holding the legs on the inside of the hull can then be as big as they need to be.

With the legs of the A frame being long at the moment Im not able to slide the frame onto the prop tube - hitting the hull !
Im thinking I might have to make an approximate position mark?

The inside of my Seaplane Tender - prop tubes not fixed nor rudder.
Its slow going for me -  too many decisions still to be made!

I would suggest you make up another "A" frame and trim the legs so it fits properly with the legs just touching the hull. This will then let you mark where to drill the slots.

Once done you can then use the real ones with the long legs and adjust accordingly. Loose fir the A frame first then the shafts. Once all okay I use an epoxy putty to fix them in place and/or a fibre glass paste compound P45 Davids I think - it has strands in it. This will set in 5 mins in this heat so get the alignment perfect, score the inside of the hull and get stuck in!

Cheers

Thanks Geoff,  That is a simple solution which will work!

I am also now looking at making a wedge to fit between tube and hull. This seems to me to be a rather simpler method which doesnt compromise the hull
by drilling slots etc.

It does but the A frames look so much better and do provide real support to the shaft if you hit something. I wouldn't be worried about compromising the hull as with a dollop of P45 fibreglass is will be massively strong.

If this is a fibreglass hull score and scrape the insides to form a key and clean and it will form an unbreakable joint.

Mount the props when doing final fixing to adjust prop clearances.

Cheers

The hull is double diagonal planked in ply. The interior of the hull is full of support beams and members. In drilling thru
for the A frame supports it will be difficult to avoid all the timbers therein.
I agree the brass supports would look good but so much more work!

These are my two options - I like the wedge support...
