Sun XXI
« on: June 30, 2018, 03:49:44 pm »

Hi All, I have recently acquired a part built Sun XXI tug - Was there such a thing as a detail kit for this tug? Or was it just a matter of acquiring bits from whatever sources?

Thanks Wayne

I think it was a full kit with fittings, as I have seen them advertised on ebay with fittings sets in the photos before but on the other hand I think Kingston Mouldings and maybe Mobile Marine Models also used to or still do hull/superstructures for the 21...…….might be either of those that you have got one of.

all the woodwork for the full kit ill have been marked with printed numbers for the parts.....check the underside of the superstructure...if no numbers on the parts, its a semi kit.....no fittings...…

however MMM might do fittings sets generic for the tug.

 I seem to remember that the Sun 21 kit was a beautiful hull...... and a box full of wood, very few fittings!   {:-{

Kingston mouldings are now not trading any more, Lesro do not make the XXI kit any more and Mobile Marine have never made a XXI or any parts for it, their Fellini fittings can be used but they take a lot of work on them to be any good.
I have a lot of photographs of the Four boats IXX ,XX,XXI And XXII if they can be of any use and I also have a set of the original builders drawings.

Thanks Tugmad, photos would certainly be of interest, have you got them on a site somewhere? Was it your dad who worked on XXI?

I am taking the tug down to the river tomorrow to check how it runs before I put it aside to await rebuild once I have cleared the bench

Cheers Wayne

Hi goBulawayo, I've built one of these a long time ago, any fittings where pretty basic in my opinion, 1 thing I thought was, your having a laugh given a piece of wood to carve your own lifeboat!
Have another in the attic which belonged to the father in law, must start it one day, tugmad, any chance I could  see some pics of XX1 for inspiration?

Thanks number-1- Yes the self carved lifeboat would be fun!! If you ever dig out your tug, I wouldn't mind scans of the timber parts to work from please.

Hi Tugmad, I do have two plans which I assume are the Lesro and builders plans. I know I can use these to make up the parts, but would be more accurate with scans of actual parts if I can get them.

Hello Wayne, I am afraid that scans of the Lesro kit parts will do you no good as most of them that I have seen are totally the wrong shapes, but you can take the profiles etc from the builders plans if they are the right scale.

OK I will have a look at the plans, just do not seem to be any sections and sufficient elevations of the superstruture to accurately cut floors, sides etc - Wayne

So finally I have started working on the Sun XXI tug. made up a new engine house roof and now busy making a template for a new deck to fit over the old one, which is a bit untidy.

Does anyone know of any build articles in any model boating magazines please.

Thanks Wayne

So only minor progress so far, deck/floor and bulkhead pieces cut out from the plan, now to draw up the sides and make those.
