Sealing around prop shaft outer tube
« on: August 03, 2018, 05:17:37 pm »

Hi,
What is the best thing to use under the hull to seal around the newly fitted prop shaft outer tube to make it waterproof?
Thanks
Dave

I usually blank off the Outside of the hole with Masking tape, then create a Well around the hole on the inside and pour in a 2 part epoxy Resin, having aligned the Prop Shaft and Motor First.
Others do it their way.

I think it depends on the manner in which the prop shaft sleeve exits the hull. If it is a neat round hole through the stern post a bit of tape around the orifice and then stand the boat upright and pour in a bit of epoxy resin. If it is a long angled slash through the keel then I like to build up a shroud around the tube and hull to be faired in when set then a bandage of resin and tape over the inside to encapsulate the wound.

If it is a brass outer tube make sure that you really rough it up as brass and resin do not like each other. So you are depending on a mechanical key. nemesis
