Help to ID destroyer
« on: August 04, 2018, 04:01:27 pm »

Hello there
Just acquired a fine model of a destroyer, it has been build more than 20 years ago and is all wood, but there are no name or numbers on it so I don't know what class it is.
The model is 131cm long and 13,5cm wide.

Similar to a Narvik class destroyer, but a post-war design for the German navy by the looks of it.

Camo scheme is almost certainly German but does B turret correspond?

It looks like a Z Narvik class 1:100, but the armament is a bit different and the location of the torpedo tubes is not as expected. But I can see that several were used post WWII so I'll be digging into it.
Hope to get it on the water before winter time.

Looks distinctly french. My guess a New Maquettes kit.

Looks a lot like a French Le Fantasque-class destroyer
Ships in the class:
Le Fantasque (10, X101, X103, D610)
Le Malin (9, 8, X82, X102, X02, D612), launched 17 August 1933, scrapped February 1964
Le Terrible (12, 11, 12, X103, X101, D611), launched 30 November 1933, scrapped June 1962
L'Indomptable (15, 7, X81), launched 7 December 1933, scuttled Toulon 27 November 1942
L'Audacieux (11, 12, 11, X102), launched 15 March 1934, severely damaged at the Battle of Dakar, repaired, sunk 7 May 1943 at Bizerte by Allied bombing
Le Triomphant (8, 9, X83, H02, X104, X04, D613), launched 16 April 1934, stricken December 1954

It's a bonny looking model!

It's magic!
Seriously I read a lot and you get to recognise a style.  British destroyers are distinctive and other nations also build in a particular way.  They use a certain kind of funnel or configuration of main armament.  As soon as I saw that model it looked French.  Knowing it's French I looked through my references and and checked with my friend Google.

For me it was the style of the bridge windows, then just a case of back checking 1950s French Destroyer images.

Opening page has a nice picture showing the same camo scheme, probably late WW2, following the US refit.

Thank you all for the help in identifying the model.
There is no doubt that it is "Le Fantasque" in 1:100. It is very well build and should be easy to get back on the water after more than 20 years in the box. I'll start a refit tread when I'm back from vacation.
