When did the RN stop painting their Victorian warships in cheerful colours and switch to grey?

Definitly and starting quite dark with a general lightening as the years went on, though some destroyers were quite dark grey well into WW1 sometimes with a lighter superstructure. And then you get the dazzle schemes :O)

I'm building HMS Lord Nelson so I suppose I'm stuck with grey - pity there's no kit for the Majestic Class that I could paint up like the England's Glory matchbox picture!
