Was googling "ocean going tug " and this image popped up, what a good looking tug! She was new to me.

Nice tug. Is that a signal flag or Japanese "Hinomaru" risen sun national flag on mainmast , courtesy flag ?  I can see part of Stars and stripes on aft mast.

She was apparently built in Japan. Could it be sea trials or delivery, pilot is on board.

Red spot on white background that period= Japan.  Everything else for the other flag suggests nothing much more than semaphore "H" to me????
...looks like they had some problems with ventilation in the aft end also.  I might doubt the vent stacks were that high originally (if that is what they are) -but thats purely guesswork.

But what vintage  :o....late 1960's to early 70's?.......why not start a guessing competition  :-))

Ventilators of this flat dish design were certainly used in these periods, however usually prominent in larger vessels

Thanks for the link LB....she certainly had a chequered history, but with 64 main engine cylinders  she would have been the Engineers nightmare  >>:-(

extract......Powered by four sixteen cylinder General Motors La Grange 16-567BC2tew diesel engines. For a rated 9,600 horsepower. Her electrical service was provided by two 8832kW generators.

If you look closely they are not just ventilators but derrick posts.

Often used the samson posts as vents hence the caps on top. Normally samson posts have nothing on top. nemesis

Interesting. The white and red stripe flag is the national flag of Indonesia, the red spot actually to me looks like half blue half red spot on a white background which would be Korea.
Then the fly in the ointment is on the aft mast quite low down looks like red and white stripes, which would the USA. It would still make a nice model though. Reading LB's history of it, I see it was United Towing out Hull that had it the longest, another Hull company that bit the dust (absorbed into larger outfit) a while back.

Alice L Moran. Built in Japan for Moran, who are, of course, American. So the flags are, I think, quite simple to explain. Stars and Stripes at the rear flagstaff, courtesy flag of Japan at the foremast as that's where she's heading, and the remaining flag indicates she has a pilot on board. I've seen this image described as a trials photo and that would make perfect sense of all three flags - and her immaculate condition and the high speed she's sailing at.
