A new discovery!
« on: September 10, 2018, 05:44:46 pm »

Whilst thinking about making a new R/C version of our Bluebird K7, I called Simon at Protean Design to ask him about a little surface piercing prop he has supplied in the past for this model. In the past 380's have been used but i wanted to use a fastoutrunner to give it some real go!
Simon advised that this prop would work well at 20,000 to 30,000 rpm (its only little remember).
I looked through HobbyKings pages to try and find a suitable outrunner but got a bit dizzy trying to find one so I took myself off to Midland Helicopters next door to see what they had. They only sell good stuff because if it's for a helicopter you wouldnt want to put some cheap and untried stuff in it would you?
Mark, their man, can up with the following:
Black Widow 2204-18A 2300kv (CW)
Its a Quadcopter motor for 2-3S with a built in speed controller rated at 18amps.
2300kv on three cells, that 25,500 (ish) rpm.
Its 28mm in diameter and is very short (the magnets being less than 6mm long so it's lioh=ght as well.
Overall it's 18.5mm long and that includes the speed controller.
The shaft has a 5mm threaded prop mount so a simple adaptor will have to be made to go down to the 2mm diameter prop shaft I am using.
For small boats this looks amazing since its good stuff and since the speed controllers are built in, reasonable at £28.
The CW means Clock Wise and you can get the same item but Anti-clockwis so you can have counter rotating props too!

I have never heard of these before so I thought I would share it with you.

Hobby King info https://hobbyking.com/en_us/black-widow-2204-18a-16d-cww-2300kv.html?___store=en_us

"With the built in ESC you can also change the direction of rotation of these motors with a simple flick of a switch" - which apparently is printed the wrong way round so changing direction under RC control looks like a no..

i doubt if an 18 amp ESC will last more than a few seconds on a high speed boat, but it will be interesting to see how Flundle's boat runs when he gets it finished.

i too have used model heli outrunners in my fast electric boats, this particular one uses a 60 amp water-cooled ESC with a 450 size heli motor @3900kv, a 27mm CNC prop, and will hit something near 30mph on a 2s lipo battery...

oh, and the boat is a MHZ micro tunnel that is about 15" long.

I am using this in my 12" long Bluebird which weighs the square root of not a lot so 18A should be OK.
Quadcopters have two rotors going CW and two going ACW. These motors are available for both of course so twin counter rotating props no problem.
Actually, Midland Helicopters only had a couple left too. More coming in soon though. Apparently sold hundreds of them. They are not a cheap shop so I recon they will be available for much less elswhere if you can find them.

I thought it was a great idea though.
