Advice needed
Keith.E:
Hi.
I am just about to restart my boating after many years and am in a
Quandary what to do regarding the radio .
I have found my old f14 tranny from years ago but minus any battery
Or receiver. I have been doing a search online and the receivers for 40 mgs
And battery seem to be unreasonably expensive these days compared to the
New sets . But I see quite a few people still use the 40 band
Am only starting will an assurance class tug build at the moment but most likely will progress from there ,
Question is do I stick with what i have which seems will be costly
Or go for a new setup from scratch.
I see you can still add more channels to the old f14 but again is more expense
Have always been a Futaba fan in the past but looking on HobbyKing there is so much more choice now ..
Any advice greatly received
grendel:
bearing in mind you can get 2.4mhz sets relatively cheap nowadays (£30 upwards) which I have found perfectly adequate for my boats, I would go with the new option.
these are digitally bound between the receiver and transmitter, so no issues with interference or crystals or channels.
malcolmfrary:
If the control requirements are fairly basic, a complete 2G4 outfit can be got for less than the cost of a single 40MHz receiver and crystals.
The downside is that whereas 40 and 27MHz receivers from any maker would work with anybody elses transmitter, there is very little cross compatibility with 2G4.
But currently, a 2G4 receiver that doesn't need crystals from HobbyKing costs less than a pair of crystals, and that is IF you can find the crystals.

Personally I'd convert the F14 to 2.4ghz with an frsky module. They're easy to do, allow you to retain the 40mhz module if you want to by using a switch, and use cheap frsky receivers
Here's an 8ch version:

did you miss the attachment..lol
i did consider going the conversion as it would allow me to add a couple of switches to the board fairly easily from what i have read.
Just unsure what or best place to get said items.
Although i'm not that proficient with electronics i might need some guidance.
with regards to a completely new setup i have been looking at
TURNIGY TGY-I6 AFHDS TRANSMITTER AND 6CH RECEIVER (MODE 2)
or
[/size]TURNIGY 9X 9CH TRANSMITTER W/ MODULE & IA8 RECEIVER (MODE 1) (AFHDS 2A SYSTEM)
or something in this region .. but reading up on reviews on and online comments there seem to be issues of one kind or another with their opperating systems
so although the new computer trannys have appeal seem to carry their own problems with bugs.
