Am properly wrong but I would never trust a matt paint to be water proof but that's just view  I would sooner use a good paint then get the finish I want with a good varnish.  I use Ronseal matt, semi, egg shell.

There has just been an interesting discussion about matt paint being waterproof on the model boats forum. It's worth a read, but it ended with confirmation from Halfords that their matt black spray is waterproof.

I have to agree with Howard all my models are sprayed in a Matt /Satin finish but I always spray a top coat of varnish. If you want a Matt finish then use a Matt varnish. A Matt finish left  unprotected will soon become very dirty and grubby but that may be the finish you would like to see. . On the net just type in are Tamiya acrylic water proof the answer you will find. But I would like to bet if you could contact Tamiya the would recommend a coat of varnish over the top of the paint

The discussion on Halfords matt black is on this forum in the painting and finishing section. It is a obviously a very different product to Tamiya model paints.

On reading the comments of this thread makes you realise why all ships / tugs etc are painted in gloss paint, at least it is waterproof until the gloss wears off with the salt spray then the deckies get going with the paint. nemesis

Yes, most full size ships are painted with gloss for obvious reasons but that doesn't work for scale models unless you want the dreaded toy boat effect. So you need a compromise of a nearly matt finish which will stand up to the sort of use our models get. As always, it is about compromises. Life's like that!
