Type 42 Batch 1 aft radar and funnel 'cabins'
« on: October 17, 2018, 06:08:47 pm »

Anyone able to answer the follow?
On the Type 42s, additional cabins were added immediately behind the stubby main radar tower and another behind the funnel. Does anyone know if both these 'cabins' have two doors or just a single door?
Ive found pictures of Newcastle and Liverpool that show the cabin behind the funnel but, on Newcastle, there's a door on the starboard forward facing side while on Liverpool, the door is on the port forward facing side. Either these cabins had 2 doors or they were on different sides on different ships.
The picture of Liverpool shows more of the aft funnel cabin and it looks like there's only one door. Anyone confirm?
Also, the other cabin behind the stubby tower with the main radar only seems to have a door on the starboard side. Does this have more than one door?
TIA

I can't answer your question directly but HMS Newcastle was a batch 1 ship and HMS Liverpool was a batch 2 ship. I know the latter was considerably different before and aft of the funnel and possibly around the Type 1022 radar base.
So if building a batch 1 ship do not look at photos of Exeter, Southampton, Liverpool and Nottingham for references. In addition the date of the picture needs to be checked as the batch 1 ships were built with the Type 965 radar until after the Falklands war when they were upgraded to the Type 1022.

This link takes you to Atlantic Models 1/350th resin kit instructions which are pretty detailed.  It may be possible to determine the answer to your query by looking at these.  However as Niall said you may need to determine any modification to the Batch 1s before proceeding.

Hi both. No need to worry, Im aware of the differences between B1s and late B2s with modified air intakes and Newcastle is 90% built. Im just putting on a few touches that are present on both batches such as the Scott Domes cabin and the cabin aft the funnel.
Lots of pics that show the differences and similarities.
