Jim,
The best boat is one you WANT to build.
The reason doesn't matter, just one that takes your faancy.

G'Day Jim

I totally agree with Bob. I haven't built a boat for at least 20 years. Look at all the models available and pic's on this forum, then choose one that YOU like.
Then, as you start to construct your model and get puzzled by what to do next - get onto the forum and ask questions.

I've asked a few dumb ones but the members have treated me with respect and have supplied more than one way to approach a problem - the experience of modellers on this forum is exceptional.

Best of Luck

hi jim
i too had the same conundrum, awhile ago and became overzealous about projects. the most recent brilliant scheme of the 1/72 airfix severn lifeboat for rc conversion did a nose dive off my desk. still looking for parts in the hoover. i still have a bismarck on the go and a snowberry sitting on the wardrobe, but my yearning to get on the water made me look around for something suitable to my newbie skill level. and after looking at last month's issue of modelboats, decided on the rttl vosper lit from modelslipways. so with a birthday next week i picked up telephone and placed my order.
newbie to newbie, recognize your skills, ask questions and find a kit or build you will enjoy.
hope this helps
a fellow newbie,

Jim have a look through the Model Slipway web site. This site is good for the beginner because everything is explained in simple terms.
My cousin is a newbie to the hobby and he found it really helpful.

Speed 280 motors don't draw a lot of current so it depends what amp hour battery you intend to use. I don't have a kit to hand at present so I can't check but is speed 280's the motors that graupner reccomend ?

hi there yep the speed 280 is recomended and here is the info .
Nominal voltage 6V
Operating voltage range 4,5-6V
No-load rpm 14000
No-load current drain 0.275A
Current drain at max. efficiency 1.58A
Current drain when stalled 6.8A
Max. efficiency without gearbox 58.2%

I was going to use a 4ah gell cell for power what do you think im really not clued up on this sort of thing at all .. thanks again

6 volt 4 amp would be fine. But if you have the room and need ballast I'd go for a 6 volt 10 amp. It all depends on what running time you are after getting out of the model between charges. If you have the hull in front of you, working out whether you have enough room for the larger battery shouldn't be difficult.

When working out the size of SLA to use, consider the hole that it will fit through, because you don't want to have to demolish the boat to remove it.  Last time I had to make up my own instructions, I made a cardboard dummy battery to have a rehearsal.  Lots cheaper than buying a battery thats too big.

Hi epoxydude......it may be me being thick ... :D but are you sure the neptun is by graupner....i have just built a neptun tug for somebody , but it is made by ROBBE not graupner....might be my mistake though.  Any who ..good choice for a first build , not at all difficult , just be careful lining up the prop in the kort nozzle...............assuming it is the same one.

Hi Bob, Yes it confused me also :-\ Both Robbe and Graupner do a kit of the same name. I'm sure they do it on purpose.  :)
