Impressive Liner Model
« on: February 13, 2008, 06:34:56 PM »

Some of you may be interested in this picture of a model of the Furness Warren liner Newfoundland built in 1947.

The model was constructed by Hal Mather who lives in Florida and it took him nine years to build! It has many working features including a CD player with sound effects, working anchor and internal, navigation and decklights. I don't know the scale but it's clearly a largeish model.

Hal obtained the plans from my friend Ronnie Lawson, now sadly no longer with us. Ronnie drew them up himself when building the Newfoundland's sister ship Nova Scotia which I admired on my visits to him. Ronnie's wife Joyce kindly leant me the picture and I thought it deserved a wider airing as you don't see many models of this type these days.

Both these ships, the Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, ended up in Australia in 1963 with the Dominion Navigation Co. The names were changed to George Anson and Francis Drake. My Dad made a model of the George Anson. It's now on display onboard HMAS Castlemaine.
