Fixing Paddle Wheels
« on: May 25, 2008, 10:11:58 am »

:)Hello again, yet another query about all things boats.

I have not long started the build of the "Caldercraft" kit "Milford Star". However I have taken a turn to the right and commenced another model. Why?, well by good lady wife suddenly decided that she would like to join me at the waters edge most Saturday aftermoons. So I thought this would be an excellent idea for me to stay longer in the workshop.

Since I keep all my Model Boat mags from 2003 anyway I got her to choose a model. Glynn Guest's "Phantom"was chosen from the Oct 2006 copy. OK, lucks simple enough and I really do enjoy scratch build as oppose to kits. Right, no more waffling, I am stuck on the permanent fixing of the Paddle Wheels to the drive shaft.  My shaft will be 3mm brass rod and I anticipate epoxy resin to "stick" the wheels to it.
As the wheels are mostly styrene I cannot think of an alternative. Any help would be much appreciated.
Keep up the good work. Bernard.

Permanent is permanent and means any future need to remove the shaft will be difficult.

I am currently building a sternwheeler and used the brass centres from nylon gearwheels as fixings for the paddle, building up the hub and spokes around them. A slight "flat" filed on the shaft allows the grubscrew to grip firmly and prevent any slipping.

I get mine from my local model shop - they've usually got something suitable I can butcher, although they seem to be concentrating more on box -shifting these days rather than scratch building!

Just use some "airplane" wheel collets of a suitable size - They are made from brass and have a grubscrew to hold them in place on the shaft..... Glue them to the hub of the paddlewheel, and you can then remove the paddlewheel if the need arises at a later date.

Better still join www.paddleducks.co.uk and check up on everything paddler related - I just happen to run the Paddleducks website :)

And very good it is as well.  I know because I'm in it, but don't let that put you off.

Very informative for all things "Paddler"

Cheers...Ken

O0Many thanks for all the info which I have taken on board. You know, in reading the replies I got to thinking in the workshop(garage) what other alternatives there might be.
I accidentally come across a terminal block 5 amp type. Took the connectors out of the plastic insulation and hey presto I could see the possibilities of two fixings.
Having split in two with a diamond cutter I have myself a couple of fittings.I will give these a try and let you know how they perform. Bernard.

PS. I have applied to join the "paddleducks".
