I think MMI is a better magazine than MB to be honest. I used to buy MB occassionally, mostly for the Brian King column, which is no longer featured.

I purchase MMI now and again, and I've personally enjoyed the last couple of issues.

Whether one magazine is "better" than another rather depends upon the extent to which the mix or articles coincides with the interests of a particular reader. Model boating is a pretty wide subject so it will inevitably be the case that from time to time there will be a run of issues which may not appeal all that much to somebody with a particular range of interests.

Both MMI and MB have recently had a change of editorship so some changes in the format and content are to  be expected. Some people will welcome that, others may be less comfortable if the magazine moves away from their core interests.

You also need to bear in mind that the editors can only publish what people are prepared to write. There are quite a few model boaters in the world and a heck of a lot of writers. Unfortunately the number of people who can do both is considerably more limited. If you want more articles that reflect your interests then you can always have a go yourself. It isn't a closed shop and both magazines have guidance for contributors that they are happy to send out.

Personally I'm just grateful that the UK can support two mainstream magazines covering this rather specialised hobby area.

Have to agree with Colin - I see both mags each month  ( I buy one, my friend buys the other and we swap) and as Colin says it depends on your interests. This way there is usually something of interest each month. 'Grey funnel' and old equipment don't do much for me so for some time I didn't find much of interest in MB. I certainly like the new layout of MMI.

I think the last couple of Model Boats have been particularly good , But go back 12 months and there where a few that got a five min scan and off to the pile , but it may as Colin has said it may have been a bunch of articles that did not interest me.

An interesting comment Peter. I know Paul Freshney is trying to widen the mix by having a greater number of shorter, more punchy items so it looks as if he's having some success. I can't really comment on MMI as I only buy it occasionally although I do have a quick look through most issues.

The rather long Dave Wiggins articles in the past in MB really did polarise readers. John Cundell said that a lot of people loved them, others hated them. Probably depends on your age!  8). It looks like Paul is keeping them going but devoting a lot less space which seems a good compromise to me.

Touchy subject this one,

What we have to bear in mind is that theres different areas of the hobby to cover ie OMRA, scale, warships, sailing etc etc and this isn't always possible within the pages of the magazine thus the editors try to cater for all areas with an aim of keeping everyone happy.
Just my thoughts ;)

My congratulations go out to Paul Freshney and Barrie Stevens, keep up the good work both of you. I am not influenced one way or the other, mainly because both have supported me with their attendance the Alfold Charity Model Boat Show in the past and I hope I will see you both again this year.

I have all ways found them of intrest so long as there was an article in there that was of intrest to me. When there was an article it is generally well written and good photos. But i do have to say since joining Mayhem and RC groups i have brought less of the 2 mags as i find more of what i want on the internet. It will be intresting to see how these 2 mags perforum With the growth of the internet.

I stake my flag to the mast and declare I buy them both. I even buy older editions to catch up what I may have missed.

Imagine my pleasure when MMI dropped on the mat yesterday. I think it was written just for me. There is an article about a visit to Waverley models complete with pictures and a challenge to go fishing with a model boat and 'Nets'.  Boston Typhoon should do well in this challenge.  Watch out prawns. Here I come.  8)

There is also an article on a super yacht of the old days, finished to perfection and looking good. Just the encouragement for me and my newly acquired 'old' hull, to get on with it and start building her.

With regards to the subjects, one only has to look on this very club to see the wealth of topics and discussions with various groups of people.  It's bound to be one persons view of that particular subject is of interest. There are 40 topics here with hundreds of replies, so any magazine would have to have at least this number to please everyone.

If your interest is only one subject craft then all the research can be done via clubs like this or the wider internet. These magazine give a wide survey of what's out there and hopes to spark interest to get us all started.

Cheers...Ken

I would hesitate to describe one magazine as better than the other -  as someone said earlier, it very much depends on one's area of interest.

However... four months ago our local newsagent/bookshop stocked both. Now they only have MMI. I guess this is down to economics - if it don't sell they don't stock it.

I must admit I take both mags. Living in Australia and not liking to become a subscriber I asked my local newsagent if he could obtain therm for me and he did the required deeds and I am now in receipt of two very informative and interesting reads per month. I find that I do not always read them from front to back at one sitting but tend to read articles that interest me and are of the type of models I am doing at that particular time but In the long run, I end up reading all the articles. It is suprising how much info you can glean from articles that in theory have nothing to do with the models you personally build.
We are indebted the the past two editors of these mags and back up the two new editors. We have to (in Ausie lingo) "give em both a go", before criticising them. More power to their respective elbows and I hope they do not go by the wayside as would happen if we as modelers do not support them.

I would love to be able to get these mags online like I do The Economist. This is subscription only.

This way there are no outrageous postage charges, and I am  not paying for paper.

I cannot pay for international subscriptions, SWMBO would not go for that.

It's not quite as simple as that. I'm told that MMI is stocked on sale or return basis, MB isn't. Not many people know that...... :)

I spoke to Brian King today. He has been suffering from a serious illness over the last year but assures me that he is OK again now - hence the break in his articles. He has another comprehensive series in preparation for Model Boats which should appear bi monthly later in the year so that is something we can all look forward to.

anyone got the latest model Boats mag June, its an improvement (for me) this month as some thought it was a bit lacking last month, I think it is down to the articles available and over the year it evens out.

Hi guys.........like someone else said , time to nail colours to the mast.........i get both .....i have mb on regular order every month and buy mmi from same shop as long as he has it in stock when i pick up mb.
Have to say i find something of interest in both mags , but not all the time , they seem to even out over the year in the interest stakes and i couldn't say one was better than the other..................

                   regards.....bob.

I used to buy Gardeners News, week in week out, most of it was repetitious but kept me up to date, and every now and again something new would catch my eye or remind me of a subject I had forgotten.
I guess it's the same with all regular magazines.

I have both mag's each month, on order with the corner shop. for the last 3 years, I enjoy both but except that from time to time
there will be bits of no intrest to me, I believe most who contribute have other jobs and do modeling, so appreciate there efforts.

I am saving mine for me old age. so are kept complete . so when my heating allowance runs out I have something to burn,   ;D
not really I am always going back looking at the tips. and builds, and I am sure when time permitting I Will build a model from
one of the plans.

Sadly, here in South Africa, neither publication is available at the newsagents, although they were up until a couple of years ago. By that stage, they were grossly overpriced - several times more than the UK cover price - so I only bought them occasionally.
I started buying the Model Boats magazine monthly in the early 70s through to the late 80s and still have them all!
I would love to subscribe to one or the other, but it's not a viable option financially, given the high postal rates and our poor exchange rate.
In my humble opinion, they are both excellent publications and I envy you lucky folk in the UK!

I must admit I get both via subscripton, and have done for years (MB for just about for ever) and as has been said, some times both are full good articals, some time times not of much to intrest me, but its nice to see what other boaters are doing. Barrie and Paul I think are doing a fine job and just need a little longer to find their feet. I must say that both mags this month have some great stuff in.
