1/16th tanks
« on: February 18, 2008, 10:08:48 pm »

I just took the plunge and ordered a Heng Long Tiger tank.

Looking forward to bashing it a bit and upgrading the gearboxes.

Anyone else here do tanks?

I've got a few tanks after living a few years in the neighborhood: 2 Tamiya, 3 Heng Long & 2 WSN & most are converted with Tamiya's electronics & battle system.  Actually am waiting for delivery of several new HL Pz4 & an upgraded Pz3 to arrive in the mail.  I'll not even tell you what I pay here by going factory direct... :-X

We are building a battlefield behind our new office for the staff & I to battle each other after hours.  They want a match against their boss so I decided it would be fun to have both WW2 as well as KTO eras to play.  I can't wait to take on their T34s in NKA & CVPA colors with my M26 Pershing. Should be a fun sight!

I've been having great fun driving it round the garden and crashing through the undergrowth while shooting stuff!

I have yet to order my new gearboxes however!

Hi Guys

I'm trying to combine the two hobbies, I bought a faulty Hen Long M41 Walker Bulldog and i'm in the process of converting it to a stand off scale M113 personnel carrier (the amphibious one). Its a challenge but at least I won't have to lug it to the lake from the car and back every Sunday!

Keep Floatin' yer boats

Are Tamiya's 1/16 and 21st Century Toys about the same size? My impression is that Tamiya's tanks are smaller. Please take a look and let me know.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syBteGnx4Ns

The tanks from 21sat Century are in fact 1/6 scale M5s

1/16 tanks are good fun, but be careful that the bug doesnt bite too hard ! 1/6 and 1/4 scale are even more so.

try      http://www.mark-1-tank.co.uk/ for full details.

I'll stay with the smaller kind as I fear my bank account would be sorely bruised.  Am on Armotek's mailing list & recently received the announcement for their new PzKw III.  It looks very nice & I know its meant for the serious collector, but I'd rather spend that kind of money on a 2nd car!  :o

I am currently putting the tanks on hold until later this year when I build an M4A1 using Tamiya's kit as the base & an excellent hull kit from a fellow enthusiast in Texas.  After that, I plan to start work on several scratch built WWI tanks, a Mk IV Male & A7V.  If anyone here is a WWI fan, let me know as I am acquiring as much info as I can to compliment the drawings & photos I already have.

Here's something that combines the best of both worlds that I can afford, but I only wish it were offered in 1/16 so it would fit in with my collection.  Now I'll have to buy several of the new VS 1/24 IR Soviet tanks that are due later this year..

You can see that next time you're in France & near Saumur - its at the museum.  A buddy of mine sent those from last week's Tank Expo where they were running a Panther, Hetzer, Sherman & Grant from their collection.

This is what can happen if you let these things take over your life - they can be addictive as evidenced by a friend of mine in Columbia, SC who is a retired US Army tanker & enjoys building RC tanks. Most are heavily modified Heng Long, WSN or 21st Century models with a few Tamiya thrown in.  He took along a few models from his modest RC tank collection to display at last months Tank Extravaganza at the AAF Tank Museum in Danville, VA.  Any tanker would love the place since it has the worlds largest indoor battlefield as you can see from the video link below.   I still have no idea how he got 34 tanks & halftracks into that van!  :o

Here's his commentary that came along with the photos:

Quote
My Korea 1958 diorama got best of show. M-47 tank detailed inside & out with
interior lighting. Mechanics changing road wheel bearing and bow gunner in
the bushes with a little jo-san.

I kicked some Tamiya but with Phils' DBU battle system. System is as good if
not better that Tamiya and 1/4 the $. (bet that went over well in Danville...-cm)

My flame tanks also got a good reception...people not realizing what that
little tank was doing creeping up so slow and suddenly being sprayed with a
stream of napalm (water). My Ot-34 gets out about 9 feet but My Pz III M
Flammenpanzer only gets out 5-6 feet but has full traverse.   Will have to
do some nozzle work.

Bill

You can find him under the handle of Pattoncommander over at RC Universe.  He's going to take a break & step away from tanks for a while to concentrate on his music: he plays a mean bass clairnet, oboe, English horn & just taking up the bagpipes; later this fall he'll be traveling to Hungary & Israel to play with several noted symphonies - not too shabby for a ex-tanker...  O0

I have a series of photos of Type 97 conversion which is based on a HL Pz3.  He was probably AsiaTam's best customer on one point!  {-)

Unfortunately, I fear the market would be too small for it that to happen.

As noted above I plan to build my own Mk IV & A7V sometime next year & am currently pulling together reference material.  If you or anyone would be interested please get in touch with me.

Here are a few of the drawings & photos for consideration.

The hulls will be quite easy to build as they are flat plates.
But what about the running gear and tracks?

But what about the running gear and tracks?

True, that's the beauty of these early designs.  Running gear would be of turned aluminum & brass.  I'd probably make the plates in Alumilite or similar to keep the tooling cost down, but die casting is another option if I there would be enough interested to help share in the pain, ie, expense.  For appearance sake, I'd not want to machine like some have done nor use existing modern tracks.

Heres an aluminum MkIV from a German enthusiast that features a simple approach to the running gear.  You'll want to be sure to take note of the color of nail polish worn while filing the access holes of the inner bulkhead.  ???
