Mountfleet 'Active' & MMM's 'Gribbin Head'.

Does anyone have any information on the Mountfleet Active tug.  It looks a nice model but I have read on another site that there are some quality problems.  Another tug I am interested in is MMM's 'Gribbin Head'.  Any information most welcome.

Hi Bradley

Welcome to ModelboatMayhem. I hope you enjoy your visit with us.

I have just built Mountfleet's model, The Boston trawler. (see my build in the Builds section)

I can recommend their models as superb. The fittings are outstanding and the Hull is superbly detailed.

I must stress that the instruction book leaves a lot to be desired and the only way I knew how to fit all the parts together, was to ask the Mayhemers for advice. This could have been due to my being a learner to the model boat hobby, as the instructions assume a high knowledge of all things boaty.

They are very time consuming with all the lovely details, which is reflected in the price, but well worth the effort.

Hope this helps with your decision making. We are here to help you.

All the best

Hi Bradley and welcome,

I concur with Ken,

MMM does superb models but again an assumption of some knowledge is made, having said that a phone call is all that is needed to sort out any problem...failing that, the expertise here on the forum will ably see you through to a successful build.

Hi Bradley and welcome to the forum.  I am building the Mount Fleet Ben Ain at the moment and I am thoroughly enjoying it.  I have to say though that there were a couple of pieces missing but they were both in the post the next day after a phone call.

I also noticed a couple of slight differences with the original ship but these had been deliberately simplified for ease of construction.  I would say that multi-media kits are not easy to build and pre-printed wood is not as accurate as laser cut parts but there is then more satisfaction in the completed item because there is a lot more involvement from you.

You are certainly wise to ask around and I would suggest look at as many forums as you  can and collect as much information as you can get about the kits before deciding which way to go.  I would strongly suggest a visit to a model show first and get to see what is inside the box and get to chat first hand with modellers who have built such kits.

Hi Guys,
Many thanks for your welcomes and help.  I am not a newcomer to model boats having built a 'Marie Felling' and a scratch built Scottish fishing boat, etc., in the past but, with a house move a couple of years ago, I lost interest and sold most of my models.  I now want to start again and thought that 'Gribbin Head' or 'Active' might be a good starting point.  Please keep the thoughts coming on these kits.  I now live near King's Lynn in West Norfolk and, no matter how I search, I am surprised to find that there does not appear to be a model boat club in Lynn.  I have also heard on the grapevine that there may be a model show in King's Lynn in August.

I built an Active a few years ago - the quality wasn't great but I think that might have improved. The real problem with Active was that the superstructure is a fibre glass moulding, which with the white metal fittings on it, made it rather 'top heavy'.

I intend picking up a 'Gribbin Head' from MMM on my way back from North Yorkshire (after visiting the Harrogate Show) the week after next.  Can any Mayhemers give me any advice on whether to use the MMM motors, or any other advice on this model, please.
Many thanks.

Hi Derek,

I bought 2 of MMM's T4 motors to run my Lady T and am delihted with them, powerful and quiet. At a tenner each I thought they were quite good value..

The beauty of buying from MMM is that any future advise required will be eqasily forthcoming as they really do know their own kit.
