New launch system for lifeboats
« on: May 29, 2008, 08:35:19 pm »

Hello all, I thought all those interested in lifeboats might be interested in an article I just read in this months 'Engineer'. It illustrates and describes a system being built by all-terrain vehicle specialist Supacat based in Devon. Described as part tractor, part submarine, part tank it will automate the launch of the new Fast Carriage boats that will replace the Mersey class vessels. Launch control is in the hands of the coxswain not the tractor driver. There is a turnatable allowing the boat to rotate on the carriage. Fascinating stuff and a challenge for any modeller. Cheers Graham.

A couple of things about the FCB2 project, firstly the RNLI have delayed the project because of issues with the hull performance http://www.rnli.org.uk/who_we_are/press_centre/news_releases/news_release_detail?articleid=322374 and also the Supercat is not the only tractor system that is being trailed there is also a system by Bigland (Clayton Engineering Ltd) who build the current system for the Mersey. Although the Supercat is the more impressive looking of the two.

Seems like I saw some video of trials a while back...
They towed two boats out of the house, down the shore to the water. 8)
