Frustrated
« on: May 16, 2008, 01:18:02 pm »

Just spent the day on the Internet researching where I could buy Plasticard/ HIP Styrene sheet and profile strip. Now you would think, why is this person having difficulties - easy, I live in Australia.

You gents in the UK have got it really good, anything you need, just step down to your local hobby shop or Halford's. Compared to where I live, just finding a Hobby shop that deals in anything other than aircraft is a task and a half.

Prop shafts - cannot buy anything here longer than 12 inches - will need to search UK for these

After a number of hours on computer, managed to find a manufacturer of Styrene sheet and now only need to take a cut lunch and a very long drive to get there. Price does not seem to matter as I am happy just to have found somebody. As for the Evergreen Strip, that took even longer but was surprised that I can actually buy that too.

Paint - now here is another headache. I'm after an Acrylic, preferably Plasticote, but can only find in Aerosol cans - no good as I wish to use it in an airbrush - mind you, I'd be happy just to find the paint and eventually will require in a certain colour - ahhh...........

Plasticard glue that I can purchase here - I see this will be another challenge - no luck so far

Then there's.................

One very Frustrated Modeler

Martin how right you are and yet here in Spain, I cannot get my hands on a half decent airbrush. Spray paints are not easy to get, although there is an oulet about 25 miles away that sells them....sometimes....Those in Blighty really are spolied when it comes to choice of products..

I have had to order most of my stuff from UK at extortionate postal rates...

Hi Martin,
Re Plasticard/Styrene sheet, havent you got access to an old fridge, apparently the lining is plasticard, and if you are near a Plumbers shop you can buy plastic pipe CLEANER not the adhesive and this will weld it,and is less than half the price of plasweld.
Regards from up above in blighty,

Len.

Barry, good to hear somebody else suffers from my dilemma. I was given an airbrush many years ago in a nice wooden box (made in USA) and have a couple of professional spray guns of which I used to spray Clear polyurathane on furniture. Fortunately I have the equipment but cannot find the material to spray.
I build large scale models which would mean a lot of those small Humbrol Cans - not an economical way of doing things.
At the moment I have a Mayhemmer doing inquires for me re handrails/stanchions etc from James Lane - imagine if I tried from down under.

So, I have come to the conclusion that I will have to pay a high price just to get what I want from overseas (UK Mainly) but things like paints and glues cannot be air mailed.

This morning I received an email from Float-A-Boat in Melbourne stating that they hold Evergreen Strip - great as they also do mail order. Another headache for me is that I have never used Plasticard for superstructures and wish to experiment around a bit but don't know which strips/profiles .
 to order..

Len, thanks for the idea of Plumbers pipe cleaner. I have used this product for some DIY plumbing and do recall that the pipe does get very sticky..

Those in Blighty really are spolied when it comes to choice of products..

Life would be so much easier if their were a HALFORD"S just around the corner :'( :'( :'(

Steal the health and safety signs from work!

I used old "Fire Exit" & the blue mandatory signs to use the card in my Nederland rebuild.   The only downside I found was that parts of it glowed in the dark until I had finished the painting!!

Damien,

I purchased 3 bottles of Plastic-Weld and arrived within 8 days. I was certain that customs would put a hold on it - no problems.
Did you know the supplier (seller) is a member of this forum? O0 Can't hide anywhere ::)

Thanks again
