Fast setting adhesive
« on: August 28, 2009, 03:57:56 pm »

I am building an old Billings Frigate Jylland.
I have cut out a large number of square holes in the hull for the gun ports (30) the cannons are 'half' cannons, that is they are machined half way down into a spigot, this is fitted into a small of strip of square wood, which is slightly larger than the gun port.
Dab of glue, angle it through the hole, pull it back to sit the cannon square in the gun port.
I need 'glue' that is quite thick and rather fast setting, I don't want to be sitting all day holding cannons in position waiting for the 'glue to go off, and if one falls inside there is no way of getting it back !!
Advice on thick quick setting adhesive please.

Colin,
Thick superglue usually takes a bit longer to set that the thin one.
So gives you a little time to position before hardening.
Or there is 5 minute setting 2 part Epoxy Resin.

Colin,
As it sets in 5 mins don't mix up too much and apply with a cocktail stick.

I assume that there will be a ' stiff ' point, when there there will be no slide, trial and error I guess, don't let go too soon !!

Hi Colin

As you have a number of repetitive fixings to do, could you not put a 'croc clip' or some such gripper on a square plug (to match your holes)  so that the barrels protrude through a hole in the centre. ?

That way, you can be assured there will be no movement during the setting process.

Just a thought.

Hi Colin,i was thinking along the same line as Ken,my mate, who was selling the Le Superbe, has decided to finish it,and he,s at the same stage,of fitting the guns into the ports,he,s made up a little jig, that holds the barrels in place whilst they set,he can hold 5 at a time, and all it is,is a strip of wood with holes in it lined up to centre the barrels

Thanks, I have been thinking along similar lines, I am wondering if I could use rubber bands looped around the cannons, and then looped over a small beam that is set up on a couple of spacers - constant tension.

Talking of cannons, the other week we were walking in Norfolk, on a small green outside of Wiveton church, there is a cannon
planted, mouth to sky with a ball well rusted in the top. Go around to the other side and there is a huge hole blown out, I imagine that must have caused a few palpitations to anyone close by.
