XP versus Vista
« on: June 09, 2008, 04:10:33 pm »

I'm thinking of getting a new desktop PC.
I have the choice of XP or Vista as the operating System, currently I'm using XP with the Service Pack.
Which OS should I go for?  Advice please

Hi Ken , i use XP on the home system and vista on the laptop ,i was a but worried at first about vista as i have heard loads of horror stories about program conflictions .
But after 6 months on both i can not fault the new system ,ok you may have to upgrade some of your programs to work but there are solutions and fixes/patches out there usually from either microsoft or the program suppliers.

I have XP on the laptop and Vista on my desktop and have grown to like XP and become comfortable with it.  I was surprised at how trouble free Vista has been despite the iitial negative hype so I feel a lot easier with it now.  It does take a bit of getting used to and it does tend to lead you a bit too much and ask you too many daft questions but I've not had any problems.

You know you are going to have to make the switch one day anyway so you may as well go for it now!!

Hi Ken

I have XP on the desktop PC and Vista on the laptop.

Although I prefer XP, once I got used to Vista I get on fine with it.

My wife who uses computers all day prefers Vista.

You like me have to move with the times someday so you might as well do it now.

If you have the choice, as much as it pains me to say it, I would recommend Vista over XP.
Vista is well established and supported in the market place now and XP is dieing a slow but valiant death now.....
(I won't run Vista as it way over the top with graphics and NO ONE has shown me any advantages of Vista over XP!)

Make sure that the Vista that is offered with the PC is premium or above and has at least 1Gig of memory.
(Think about upgrading to 2Gig if it's an option.)

I use XP on my desktop and Vista on my laptop. I would recommend at least 2 gig for RAM to work your programs and Vista for it takes a lot to run it. My other laptop had only 533 meg of RAM and it was a long wait for it to load up. I upgraded to 1 gig, but it still a little slower than what I like. My main laptop has 2 gig and Vista runs really well.

I would endorse what has been said above. I replaced my desktop which came with Vista Home Premium and 1 gig of RAM and runs OK but upgrading to 2 gig of RAM is definitely a good idea. You do get used to Vista quite quickly, it has some nice touches. You may find that you need to upgrade the device drivers for peripherals such as printers, scanners etc. but this is usually straightforward although one of my printers was simply too old and had to be ditched. Service Pack 1 has now been issued which has cured some initial glitches with things like Compaq screen drivers. (Don't accept Vista Home Basic - as Martin says, go for Home Premium or above.)

I think that a lot of the initial bad publicity came from people trying to upgrade from XP to Vista. If you have a new machine with a clean Vista install it should work without any problems now.

I bought a new pc that had Vista running on it and could not run any of my existing software, itunes, casio digital camera, epsom picture printer, outlook 2000, Pinnacle Studion.

In the end i reformatted the hard drive an put XP on it!

I will change over but only when there are drivers for all my existing programs.

Good luck

XP until I have no options then suppose I will move to Vista , I Use Vista at work and it is and absolute pain when dealing with various applications, it has security issues all over the place, but in the end it should get sorted maybe by Sp3. By then I'm sure Mr Gates would have brought out another system and we will all be saying how wonderful Vista was..

For me, making music with a computer, means I must squeeze every last ounce out of the resources it has. I've got XP slimmed down and highly optimised on this PC and 'straight' on the other PC and laptops. Vista is just plain resource greedy and, compared side by side, slower for what I do than XP. It's also way too 'nannying' for me. I still have some hardware that has only just got out of the beta driver stage for Vista!

I have to ask myself, is there anything in Vista that I haven't got or need or wouldn't disable if I had it. The answer's no and so I'll stick with XP Pro, probably until Vista's replacement comes out!  {-)

For most people, Vista is an OK operating system, but not for me.

No problems with Itunes on my Desktop. I never use camera software, I just put the card in the reader and if I need to edit it use Photoshop Elements. Mine is an old version 2 but no problems with Vista. In most cases you can get an update/fix for mainstream software.

If I was still running XP I wouldn't have bothered to upgarde to Vista though.

Personal songs should NEVER be recorded. They should be confined to the car or the bathroom.  ;)

You also can not play any HD or Blue Ray DVDs on a Vista machine due to a deal Microsoft did with the media companies to stop copying. There was a thread some time ago on here about Vista when it first appeared. Vista also checks your software to see if it is original and will stop it running if it is not, also it checks back to Microsoft regularly and if you stop it doing this, by denying it access to the internet you are breaking the license agreement.

A lot of American institutes will not use Vista and have removed it from their systems and loaded Linux

I will stick with XP until I am forced to change, my daughter has just brought a laptop with Vista on and she has to turn some of the protection off on her machine to download music she has paid for. It also treats you like child with all its stupid prompts.

One of the main reasons I asked is that I have uploaded all my Vinyl Singles (and yes some of them are worse than my singing even in a car) on to my current Pc using XP. From what I can gather a Pc with Vista would not allow them to play, this would also go for a lot of video I have put together from various events , or does it allow video to play.

I don't know how you aresetting up your Vista but I can play mp3s I can import video and save it from the tv card and burn to dvd and as far as I am aware they are selling Vista machines with HD drives as part of the much hyped Vista media player

Sounds like a "suck it and see" situation. I've loaded some of my CDs into Itunes and they play OK on Vista. Can't you load some sample files onto somebody elses's Vista machine and check?

Frankly I resent paying Microsoft for the privilege of being an involuntary Beta tester for its latest products. I also don't see why I should pay to upgrade my hardware and search the web for driver updates in order to continue to do what my present set-up does perfectly well. It's a bit like buying a new car that goes at the same speed as your old one but costs more and uses twice the fuel.

I'm with Brian L all the way on this one. If it ain't broke then don't fix it.

I am somewhat biased but even so..... :)

I know personally of four people who's computer came to the end of it's life recently.

They made an entirely different choice, an iMac or a MacBook, now they've apparently never been happier computer-wise.

If you really need XP you can install a copy and dual boot, or cooler still, with VMWare or Parallels, you can even run both at the same time :)

For the truly geek amongst us, Mac OS X 10.5 is actually a certified UNIX.

Vista drives me crackers, apart from it's sluggishness on existing hardware, it's the security (idiot!) that is the final straw...

"Are you sure you want to do that?" I clicked the flippin' button didn't I? Of course I flippin' well want to do that!!

.....and relax  {-)

-Rob

ps XP sp3 on my dual boot partitions btw.

I'll stay with my Mac (Leopard) & Mac / XP at the office.  Vista will never set foot in my business & I plan to eventually switch over to Mac to keep away from the local IT idiots who use nothing but malware-loaded pirated software to guarantee repeat business.   >:(

You did not say what you would be using the computer for?  If it's e-mail, word processing and internet, then it probably does not matter.
But if you are doing any video editing, high-end music or possibly design using a CAD system - then it requires a closer look.
In any case enjoy your new computer.

Thanks for all the info.

I still Haven't decided which OS to go for. One reason is that I  can't remember where all my software came from, and I don't like the idea of Microsoft interogating my system to check if I've paid them enough money.
My Office and Money are pretty old versions now, but do work under XP,  I'm nervous in case they won't run under Vista even in the XP Compatabi;lty Mode.

However I do like the added security of Vista and also wonder how much longer XP will be supported

Dont know about you guys but i have peronal recordings and videos from my camera and phone on my vista laptop and they run perfectly .
The only thing i have found is that a friend of mine converted all of his music on his hard drive to run on his soney mp3 which uses Atrac and when it came to putting some on cd it wouldn't ,as a result he had to dump over 40gig of music ,sad
