Sub-Newbie wants to build Wooden Speed Boat..
« on: June 11, 2008, 08:52:24 am »

Hi Guys

It's always been an ambition of mine to build a timber speed boat.  Tho, this will be a project for a long way in the future as I just don't have the time or health to be messing around in boats.

However, I have been looking for a long term project to keep me ticking over in the workshop and I'm considering making a scaled motorised model boat.  I have some experience with RC Cars in my youth and I am a hobby woodworker with an equipped workshop.

This is the sort of design I'd want, both for the model and the future full scale.

Thing is, I wouldn't know where to start!  Would there be plans for this sort of thing?  I'd want to do it from scratch, not a kit.

Would appreciate some advice

Have a look here for plans:

A tip: The categories are not always what they seem - there are a few speedboats scattered around in "cabin cruisers". Have a good browse round.

Hi WiZeR

If you have a look at Masterclass build; there is a topic in there Plan for Beginners.  The Plan is for a Swordsman build - very simple straight forward build and ideal for the beginner.  O0

The plans are available from a gentleman who is on this Forum, FLJ/ACTion Electronics and the plan shouldnt cost much (just a few quid).  Along with the plans Dave will be able to supply the motor/speed controller for the model - so get in touch with FLJ.   Have a look at the build.

WiZER

One of the comics recently published a free plan by Richard Webb of a Fairey Huntsman.

It is designed for styrene, but would be equally easy in 1/32 ply or Balsa

but those barrel-back Chris-craft look the business.

Well guys that gave be a good few hours of reading.  I think that Chris Craft Triple is JUST what i'm after! How fantastic to have that WIP thread for assistance.  I hope he doesn't remove his pics.

Thanks for your kind help.  I will let you know how I get on.

Well, I tool the plunge and have just received my Chris-Craft Triple.

But I have just realised I haven't a clue what I am doing.  So be prepared for questions :)

First things first.  Tools and Materials:

Building board.  It says to use ceiling tile.  In the other Triple thread, it looks like the author used plaster board.  Is this a suitable material?  What about cork floor tiles?

Model Building Saw.  What's one of those then?  Just a mini tenon saw?

Is there a standard model building brand of epoxy, poly resin and CA?

What are and where can I get T-Pins, Wax Paper, clothes pins?

Any other tips for the complete beginner would be most appreciated! ;)

WiZeR

For a building board I always use a length of old "Contiboard" shelving -  one of the useful side effects of the DSM's decorating requests! If you need something to assemble stuff on to using pins etc, get hold of an old cork noticeboard, or stick you cork tiles down on a ply base.

Model building saw is, I guess, a razorsaw -  local hobby shop. As regards adhesive, everyone has their own opinions. I use "waterproof" white PVA and cheap superglue (CA). Wax paper is greaseproof paper, I think. If you are using it to keep the building off your plan, far better to photocopy the original plan and build direct on the copy. Get your pins from the wife's sewing tin - or buy your own at the supermarket.

Hope this makes sense and helps

Cork tiles stuck onto a mighty piece of 4*2-braced MDF, for me.

A junior hacksaw is always useful. Plus Stanley knives (box cutter in the US?) and scalpels for fine work.

Clothes pins are clothes pegs in the UK, I think?

Glues - PVA, epoxy and CA all have their uses.

Thanks guys.  That chucks some light on the subject.  It is an American plan and I'm most nervous about the imperial measurements.  I'll have to keep google converter to hand.

I will start a build thread when I get going.
