Water Skier plans / construction notes.
« on: June 29, 2008, 08:36:58 am »

Hi ....

I'm looking for plans of how to build a Water Skier for towing by a sports boat. I first saw this in 2003 in Marine Modelling by Gary Grollimund. If anybody knows how to contact him that wouyld be a good start. Failing that any ideas on how to construct one successfully would be appreciated. Martin, I wasn't sure where to post this one that's why it's here....

Many thanks

If I remember correctly the one I saw was an Action Man figure on box skis with a counter weight like a yacht keel. I guess you need to experiment with the skis to find the correct bouyancy and required weight of keel.

I have seen people use a piece of clear lexan with the skies stuck on and a cord to the front of it and to the hands so you pull on both.

I had a small one built up from the neighbor boys happy meal figure.

 8)

The two skis were 1.5mm plywood. They were connected to each
other at two points. I bent the tips up by soaking the plywood and
clamping it in a form. Then tipped the outside edge of each ski up
so that the two skis formed a shallow "V"

The tow rope was attached low to the front of the skis.
If the rope is run directly to the skier, or does not have that
low attachment point, it just pulls the skier over the tips and he just tumbles.
I also had a brass wire skeg to keep the skier straight.
The larger the skier, the further apart or wider the skis should be for balance.

[edit]
Oh yeah, the little foam life vest kept the figure floating on it's side till it was
pulled upright on the skis.  :)

Added some clear plastic to the ski's to increase the planing area.
Now it will plane behind the Springer....

Funny though, if I run at full throttle, the skiier will flip upside down, or get dragged under the water.

 :D

Forgot my camera, had to take these with the cell phone...  :(
