Where can i obtain modern day floating side fenders???
« on: August 10, 2006, 08:05:56 pm »

Do you know of anyone that sells modern day floating side fenders, they can be the round tube kind or ball versions, pre-made or in kit form. The scale i am afterthese in  is 1/25.

Any info on the above would be great!

...Come to think of it, if anybody knows a material these can be made from, or has built some already (Pic's would be nice!) then please get in touch.

Wander down to your local angling supplies shop and gaze in awe at all the floats on display. Choose from the controller floats for modern looking fenders in all sizes  ::).

Here is one I made earlier for my Big Mersey!!

A really neat idea - It just goes to show what can be done with a bit of lateral thinking!

That's how I build all my boat fittings whenever possible, I object to paying for things that with a little lateral thought can be made from common items for peanuts. 8)

The only problem is that some of us (myself included!) just don't have the sort of brain that can handle much in the way of lateral thought Mike! I have difficulty remembering what I did yesterday, nevermind where I saw that little thingummyjig that would be ideal for the part I'm working on right now.... So I end up buying commercailly made items and paying through the nose for the privelidge! :-(

My wife hates going shopping with me beacause I will pick things up and say  "that will make such and such a fitting if I take of the top, push in the bottom and paint it red!!!!!  :D :D :D "

I also used to buy fittings but as they got more expensive I bought less and less and made more and more!  ;)

You have a good way of thinking, that way your boat will stand out from everyone elses standard fittings!!!

My main problem are parts that have to be made from metal - I'm hopeless at working with metal.... For example, I'd love to build a 1:12 scale model of Malcolm Campbells boat Bluebird of Chelsea, but the one thing that's always stopped me is the inability to find suitable stanchions! It seems no-one does anything large enough, and just soldering together some brass wire isn't going to hack it at such a large scale :(

Any suggestions anyone? Mike?

It all depends upon what they look like!!

Wander around the kitchen section of your local "Everything a Pound Shop" and look at the components that make up some of the items there. You will be surprised at what you can find, e.g round metal skewers with knobbly bits on that can be cut into sections to  make stanchion uprights, food strainers that have square section mesh for engine grills. The list is endless!!!! 8)

I also made some on a smaller scale, again using fishing floats.  Mine were about 2 inches long and about 3/8 inch diameter. Each one made two fenders. When I cut them to length, the one end was flat and with the help of a Dremel tool and a special female cove type burr bit, was able to round off the bad end, then using some small gage copper wire, made the eye for hooking up to the boat lines. They worked well.  Sometime when I've a few minutes to spare, I'll send pics to the main man, Martin.

From my mate the "Crazy Yank!"

Someone on the forum was looking for boat fenders and there was one solution sent in, but I couldn't find
the proper size fishing floats to make mine, so here's an alternate made of balsa fishing floats, which are
made in  smaller sizes than the plastic ones in the forum, for those of us with smaller scale boats.
