When I have a moment to myself
« on: July 10, 2008, 01:53:53 am »

Well when I'm not making shafts, props, frames or anything else (Ha Ha) and the wife don't notice me missing this is what else emerges from the dark

don't look big but for what it is it is.
for anyone interested it's a 1/4 scale Bentley BR II rotary as fitted to the sopwith snipe of WW1. finished it will be 347 cc and throw a 28" prop.
there are no castings involved as they are not available so everything is machined from the solid,
"o" and I know theres a cylinder missing thats in the workshop.

Hanna, that's fantastic! I hope one day you will post a video with soundtrack of that machine running .. perhaps in the next day or two... ;) I admire someone with the ability to build an engine such as this as the engineering work has to be second to none (PMK take note). At 347cc it's large so any ideas of bhp and rpm figures floating around at this time?
Please don't stop posting your progress on this one as I'm sure most of us will want to see this project grow.

Nice one Hanna! Have you started the plane yet?

( BTW. I've found your other cylinder, it had rolled under my bench here!  ::)  )

I yam!, I yam!
Hanna sparked a reminder as soon as he mentioned machining from the solid. A friend of mine has been doing similar work. If you're interested, I've put up some photos here...
http://www.pm.keirle.com/Jim_Pics/Engine/Engine.htm

To my eye all his stuff looks pretty much spot on. To his eye, it wasn't - so he binned it... started over (read, WHAT??!).
So what I learn't about you engineers so far is, you can sniff a 0.00000001-inch cock-up discrepency - even from a hundred paces... AND you even do it with one eye shut(!).
So I figure it must be something that only engineer's are cursed with. For how else would it explain Hanna being able to take a manky chunk of metal and turn it into THAT?!

I wish I even had the TOOLS, for starters.  :(

Thanks all, I had a look at the engine PMK resembles a seal. I now what its like to bin things, it actualy hurts dueto the waste of ime and materials allways leads to a big sulk! dont know horse power but the origional was 238 bhp @1300 rpm so a rough guess considering it would do 1300 rpm allowing for loss at scale should be about 25 bhp.

from large to small...

no the clamps arnt big the block is small, a V8 engine block at only 3" long

I wish, the two I would love to get my hands on are.
http://dynamotive.netfirms.com/merlin/more_info.htm  1/4 scale about 2500 euro for castings

http://home.brikks.com/ennaj12/v-12.html 1/5 scale 1650 dollars castings

working with casting would be a nice change from machining everything from solid,

That engine in the top picture is something else...I'd love that just sitting in my front room. Run it up every now and then to give the neighbours a treat...
