Your best chance for guessing its origin are the elevators, and the cockpit section.

However, it does have a couple of powerful links with a Scottish river!

Alex, the clue to the Spey engine gave it away - I think its a Xian JH-7 Flying Leopard (Flounder)

You've got it, Andrew. A less-than-successful fighter in the "Defiant" mould, the Roc was unique in that the section of canopy between the pilot and the turret rose and fell as the turret rotated, to clear the guns and maintain streamlining.

True, Oh King! it was never going to be a fireball with 800 HP, a hydraulic turret and full naval gubbins fitted.

ah jeesus! I won a competition about 10 years ago at my local flying club with the "Why is the prop bent" on that very picture....and I can't remember what it was for the life of me!

The aircraft is the Fantome (Can't get the accent! sorry) but I still can't remember what the reason is for the "bent" illusion from the prop.

I remember it had a Spanish engine but thats as far as the memory goes at the moment.

Fantome it is, made by Avions Fairey in Belgium.

It had a splendid Hispano V12 engine with a moteur-cannon, I believe, between the banks

But isn't it beautiful?

I have a nice peanut plan (13 inch span) and have doubled it up to make a 26 inch parkflyer - its on the list!

The Fantome is, in my humble opinion, the most beautiful biplane ever to be made.

That is a Fiat ( Fix it again Tony) CR-42 Falco standard Italian fighter at the outbreak of World War Two. There is a very nice example in the RAF Museum at Hendon, well worth a visit..... even for non sideways walkers....... ::)..............Smudge

The bent prop: if the engine was running then the photograph was taken with a focal plane shutter. This type of shutter moves from one side to the other as opposed to the iris type which opens and closes from the centre . Any moving object will be distorted as the focal plane shutter moves with the object or in opposite direction against the direction of travel of the subject. Early 35mm cameras used this type for higher shutter speeds than possible with diaphram/iris types. This is most obvious on photographs of racing cars that seem to have oval wheels in some shots.
