Anyone who believes the Government's inflation figure hasn't been down to the supermarket, petrol station, pub or, in fact, tried to buy anything lately!

What have I heard or what do I know?

My customers were affected by the smoking ban last year, and now the rise in fuel as well. Some of my customers are 60% down on the same period last year!
The ladies at the tills of the supermarket where we shop have confirmed that their takings are up around 16% - which is in line with my calculation over the increase in our shopping costs.
Filling the cars with fuel - my pickup is now around £100 a fill - up. The other cars on the fleet are on average costing around £19 extra per fill up each (and that's twice a week)

There's quite a few places that are laying off around here, as well as building sites that have ground to a halt.

Generally, it's not looking good, and if the government doesn't do something  -   soon......

And knowing Gordon t**d, chances are the government wont do anything about it, except give us a ****ing tax hike.  cigs and booze sales fall off so they hike it onto VED and fuel, so what when no one buys cars? what next, 50% VAT?

All gordon Jack4ss and his excuse for a ****ing government seem to do is tax the poor, the honest working man person, so that they can have a payrise every month for doing nothing, and working out how to put tax on top of tax.

you know better Ghost

Lets see now, they don't want us to burn fuel, they don't want us to smoke or drink as much as we do, they don't want us to consume as much food or throw away so much of it and they also want us to cut down on power consumption and not use our cars. They tell us food production needs to be increased to meet the demands of a growing population but want to build eco towns on greenfield sites whilst at the same time they refuse to cap immigration...... you can go on and on with this.
So what the heck are they going to do for revenue.... where is all the money coming from to fill the taxmans coffers.. moreover, what the hell are they doing with the money they currently rake in?
Seems they are spending billions on a war, giving billions away in free handouts to anyone who sticks out their hand and sending billions out in donations to foriegn countries, some of whom hate us and would shaft us at the drop of a hat whilst at the same time having an open door policy to migrant workers who send their money out of the country.
So generally , the man on the street with a home, a car and a job is the very one who is funding all of this whilst at the same time the oxygen wasters in Westminster find every excuse to rake in overblown expenses and appear to live very comfortably indeed.
No wonder the Brits are generally depressed and miserable and cannot see an iprovement on the horizon.

My message to Gordon Brown... "Rope can still be bought cheaply and their are plenty of carpenters looking for work!"
Perhaps we can even get the gallows built cheaply by foriegn workers!

I work in Sea Side pubs and clubs ( entertainment side )
Since January the drop off in custom is through the floor, we have almost no work, and being seasonal, July and August, dread to think what will happen after this. The local regular customers don't come out any more as they are drinking on their own, so may as well save money and do it at home where they don't have to go out in the rain to smoke.

BobF,
I really cant see your problem as you will soon be joining them.
The next assalt is on drinking, so I suppose if you go to a pub you will soon only be able to consume alcohol in an outside shelter with no more that 3 sides, these should be constructed next to the smoking shelter so you can get the second hand smoke.
In my local pub since the smoking ban there has been a drop of 30% in takings of alcohol.
Even as a smoker the pub has a far more pleasant atmosphere without smoke and it is certainly easier to get served as there are far less customers, but I still don't know why the Draconian measures. Who cares if a smoking shelter has 4 sides or 5 or even 6?
My main fear though is what is next, smoking almost banned, drinking under threat, motoring taxation increasing to unrealistic levels?
So what will be next to replace the taxation funds being lost through a reduction of the taxes on smoking, drinking and the staff who have lost their jobs, I shudder to think!!

How about 25% VAT on road fuel, domestic electrical goods, sporting and leisure equipment etc? It's been done before - the last time was by a Labour government, about a week before Ted Heath took delivery of his brand new yacht!! My money isn't on whether or not Brown will do it , it's on whether or not Camoron would repeal it as/when his crowd gets in.

You saw it here first, folks............ :o

It doesn't matter what legislation any goverment enacts, an opposition party on getting into office will rarely, if ever, repeal  previous Acts of Parliament.  They'll muck about with it, change bits of it, try to improve it, but repeal it....

I think the basic premise is, that if it's already in statute, we all have to live with it?

Can anybody think of a contentious Act that was fully repealed? (Just to prove me wrong).

The price of petrol has dropped £1.16 - £1.20 in Birmingham down to £1.11 - £1.13.
I wonder why.

The price Oil is dropping markedly on the spot market.  We're still paying 1.18 down 2p since last week. Not a lot, there must be more competition in Birmingham.

I seem to remember when petrol began to increase a few years ago, that garages had to sell their remaining fuel in their tanks at the old price until the next delivery of fuel which was of course bought in at the higher level then sold at the new higher price.
That little thing quietly just disappeared and it gets jacked up overnight!
I think the loss of custom within pubs has resulted in more drunkeness on the streets and loutish behaviour as landlords were obliged to stop serving someone if they considered they were getting past their 'full up' mark. Now they appear to 'drink to the death' outside amongst themselves and it may be the reason we see so many going horizontal in public places.
I must say, I havenever understood the urge to do it as I would much prefer to spend an evening building in the workshop than squandering my money and life away on booze.
Ah well, takes allsorts to make a world.... but it could be better if we had a strong captain at the helm.

I remember VAT at 10%.  I also remember who almost doubled it to 17.5% immediately after being elected on the promise of tax being cut "at a stroke".
There isn't a politician in the world who should in any way be trusted, and anybody who aspires to political office should be locked up immediately.  This will save time and future trouble.
An economical form of execution would also save expense.  Just an afterthought.

The trouble is they will promise all sorts to get elected; once they are in it starts to crumble and the worse bit is there all as bad / good as each other.
The devil and the deep blue sea springs to mind.
