Sailing RC boats in sea water?
« on: August 09, 2008, 10:52:41 pm »

Has anyone ever sailed their RC boat(s) in sea water? An experienced model boat builder that I spoke to said it is possible as long as you place the boat in a bath of fresh water afterwards (to rinse off the salt build up). I only mention this because it would be nice to obtain some realistic and atmospheric photos of RC boats in one of the most common places real boats/ships sail. It would also be nice to feel that your model had actually "tasted" the sea at least once or twice. Obviously one would have to choose a calm location like a harbour or estuary and sail with care! Photos appreciated!!!

Salt water is not a great problem, if its still like in a seaside lake.  "Open" water, however, implies currents.  The boat going at scale speed will be travelling in water moving at an unscaled speed, which could give rise to problems.

Check out the guys at Clevedon "www.clevedonmodelboatclub.co.uk" site still under construction last time I looked, but they come up frequently as a member of SWAMBEC.
They sail on the marine lake, no problem. Just rinse the boat off in fresh water. If you're running ic then do as the jet ski'ers do and push fresh water through the manifold.

I went to the Southend Model Power Boat Clubs Diamond Jubilee meeting last weekend, they sail in salt water, the club had very thoughtfully put an old fibreglass fishpond filled with fresh water on the bank for all to run their boats in as soon as they came off the lake.

Many thanks for the excellent information everyone! I was particularly impressed by the Clevedon Boat Club, John. It's a wonderful setting for model boats don't you think? Sea, cliffs, real boats, seagulls, etc. Fantastic!

All the best to you all

Is this a sea water lake then? I know the location is pretty spectacular...
