Do you think a decent boat could be made out of one of these?

They also do an aircraft carrier called "Challanger" both items can be found on ebay.

They look, if I may say, a bit 'toyish' but at the same time, look to have a degree of scaleness and detail about them. From the pics its hard to tell what size and therefore scale they are.

Im certain a better builder than me could take them and turn them into a good scale representation of whatever naval ships they are supposed to be.

What price are they going for?

Both the "Smasher" and the carrier are freely available for sale around where I live in Shekou (China). Having had a look I would say that they are a nice toy for the kids to join in with, the detail and quality is ok.

I think that it would be very difficult (although not impossible) to modify them.

The asking price in Shekou (if i remember) is around 250RMB (15RMB=£1), but they can be haggled lower as I say that is the asking price. Not going to be home for a while, but if you wish i can try and get some better photographs for you.

Claims to be to a scale of 1:275, and is 30" long.  Special feature if "turns left, turns right".  Radio range 60 feet.

I have one of both and was quite suprised by the quality of the build, the smasher destroyer is in fact a Sovremenny Class Destroyer, and with some minor modifications and a coat of flat enamel look very good, the flat paint seems to take away the cheap plastic look, the aircraft carrier I have not yet foundm out what type it is but, it does wallow around alot, so I removed the entire deck and did some reballasting and that has made a big difference, it also recieved a coat of flat enamel for the same reason, now both models look reasonable presentable and perform quite well...

The carrier is supposed to be one of the Kiev class from the 1980's.

Not bad value for money as its RTR I suppose.

I have the Torpedo Missile Boat from the same group.
What price are you looking at for the others as I am about to purchase them and at the moment waiting on feed back to get them a lot cheaper. Who is the trader selling them.

Glenpens,

There are about twenty screws which most of them have a small plug to make them waterproof, remove all then gently prise the deck from the hull, make whatever changes neccessary and put it back together, make sure  that the deck seate properly or it will not seal..

I have just bought a Challenger for the hell of it.
280 CNY or about 18.50 GBP (quid).

Roy
How did you go about rebalasting, once the deck was removed?

I had it in the bathtub with the deck section able to just sit on it, removed all there original ballast, and did a complete re ballast palcing it as low as possible till I was happy with the way it sat, then took it to the small local dam and tried it for stability under way, did need some minor readjustments, but worked well...

Must have a look at that - mine has been stalled for a while as I've been trying to get some small brass props with no success. I've bolted 30mm ones on and after christmas will be in touch with FLJ for the electronic bits. Will post a pic of my rudders soon.
