Pipe Unions - Nipples
« on: April 10, 2009, 07:45:56 pm »

Will someone please confirm the included angle of the nose of a pipe union nipple? Looks like 60 deg. to me but it's difficult to be measure with something so small.

Thanks,

60 degrees is standard on everything I've seen Barry.    Mind you if you're making the nipple and the receiving cone it won't matter as long as they're both the same!

Cheers

Guy,

Thanks for confirmation. I have to make some special fittings to accept bought nipples and so it's important.

I've been doing that most of today Barry!   I can't be bothered to make nipples so buy them in packs of 10, but mave been making up various bushes and thread adapptors for the steam inlet and exhaust on the engine and also the oill/steam separator tank.   I was going to buy one but i happen to have a piece of 2 1/2 inch brass tube so decide to make it instead.   I do the cones for the nipples with a big old 60 degree multi-flute countersink bit.   I'm waiting for a stack of ebay firebricks to build a little brazing hearth so am building up a pile of machined bits waiting to be silver soldered.   Now my engineering workshop is at my partner's cottage, I have to be a bit more careful and one bit of firebrick to rest jobs on won't do any longer.

Hi Wideawake,
Just for info I use Celcon type building blocks (from B&Q, etc) for my brazing hearth. Dead cheap, light and can be easily cut with a handsaw.

I wish I'd thought about B&Q!   The ones I've ordered are the lightweight cuttable type but I could have been playing over the w/e if I'd gone to B&Q.

Guy,

Instead of using your multi flute countersink for making the nipples. You will find that investing in a small centre drill will make a much neater and leak free job.

For 1/8" sized nipple use a BS1, and for 5/32" use BS2.

If one end breaks or wears out, just use the other end.

Thanks for that thought Bogs.  I've got a good selection of centre drills so using them won't be a problem.   It's a couple of years since i was last  able to spend time in the ME workshop and I can't remember what I used last time I needed to cut 60 deg seatings.

Cheers
