Smit rotterdam
« on: September 24, 2006, 09:05:06 am »

Hi there, has anyone built the graupner smit rotterdam?. If so can anyone give me any tips, i.e., best way to do it , best motors to use, best radio gear etc. Please keep it simple as i am new to r/c, but am looking forward to completing this model and getting it wet( hopefully only on the outside). Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Well almost corrected....the model comes ready made, hence the high price! Ready made, that's like a rude word when it comes to model boats :P

Ready made......? READY MADE.... ?  ??? Hey, I didn't see that one coming - you sure, 'cos i didn't read up the blurb?

Does it also come complete with everything installed then, 'cos if so, that kinda takes care of laserblue's question - like open the box - charge the batteries - carry out to suitable vehicle - take to nearest stretch of open water...!  ;D

Quote from Graupner website  "To prepare the model ready for running all you have to do is install the RC system components and the drive battery; complete a small number of soldered joints, and the boat is ready for the water "

I wonder how they have finished them, properly I hope, but I would suspect that they are not well finished as when you build it yourself.....

Thanks Don, wonder what they will look like then - Roy's posting is about the same concern. A bit expensive though, but then building them probably puts a lot of new model boaters off - so it really is 'the buy off the shelf and sail generation' next then (and probably who cares what the finish is like generation too!)  :D

Have to keep my eye out for one. From the manufacturers point of view, it makes good sense - it just opens up a newer market and I bet there'll be quite a few kids getting them for Xmas....  But then the trade mags will do their revues on them by next spring won't they?  ;D

Cheers, brian

Hello all,
Off topic does not help  >:( Lads, please be aware that when someone posts a genuine question to be bombarded with spurious alerts is very annoying. If you want, start another thread and keep the serious away from the light hearted aspect. Sorry rant over.  :-[

Back on topic, Chris (Laserblue16), not having built a Billings kit yet, I have admired one which a club member has completed to a very high standard. This coming Sunday is the last official event in the diary and where most of the members attempt to get along to. If the Rotterdan appears there  I'll happily ask on your behalf these very important questions. It is one as I say which I have admired and will one day aspire to doing a plank on frame kit.

cheers

Hi Chris..

Take the light hearted "Banter" with a pinch of salt..

Before you receive the kit. do as much "research" as you can via the web / google etc..  enter
Smit Rotterdam, Billings SMit Rotterdam..  and all the variations.. open a folder on your computer , and copy an paste like a mad man.. save your web links in your favourites..

Oh and search "images" using the same  entries

Somewhere in that lot you WILL find something of use.. trust me..   ;)

Then when you get the kit, read, re-read and absorb the instructions.. familiarise yourself with the parts, plans etc..

THEN start asking the questions........and your answers WILL follow..

You only need to ask.. there's a wealth of help and advice in this place, so do not be afraid to ask !

Best wishes

Steve

Cheers lads. I was only joking, i have found everyone on this site to be most helpful( it's why i keep coming back). I have done loads of research on this boat(ship??? i don't know the difference) and have printed loads of pics off. A friend of mine( Joop Timmers) used to work on this boat for smit tag, the salvage part of smit lloyd. I have since lost contact with Joop through moving away from my home town, so cannot get any info from him. Anyway, it's late now( an i'm a bit p****d, so, goodnight everyone, i'm off to bed to dream about me new hobby. Strange how it gets hold, even when you hav'nt got a boat to sail,,,,,,,YET!!!!!

There is certainly a wealth of information on building this model. I seem to recall a Far Eastern blog on a build which was detailed, but sorry, I cannot find a reference.

There is also a Artesnia Latina kit (Spanish) which is very good quality.

Regarding the Graupner ready built models (rushes to wash out mouth and sterilise typing fingers!): I saw several on the Graupner stand at the Paris Model Show at Easter (see Mayhem Gallery for photos). They certainly looked well finished but were inside large, glass, display cases and could not be examined closely. Of course, I would expect the manufacturer's display model to look superb.

Good luck with the build. Please keep us informed of progress.

Chris,

I have built two Billings kits and had no problems with them, neither were the model you are enquiring about but that should not matter to much as they really produce fine kits, I have seen several Smits and they do look quite good..
Good Luck...

I think I may have been mistaken. The Spanish kit I mentioned is of "Amsterdam" and not "Rotterdam".

Yes and a good kit as well. I was tempted but I want a twin screw tug for my next project.
