Talking to trevor at the club, apparently for the world record hydro's to count, they have to touch the water at least 1 time per lap :D

First of all I would just like to say "Darn they are quick" The last one in the hyro video was more of a plane than a boat, it hardly toched the water!

So a couple of questions:
WHY?

What happens if the line snaps?

People do it for the same reason you do model boating, because its FUN....

And if the line snaps, you get a faceful of boat. Presumably they acually have two lines...

Looking closer at the video to me it looks like there using a solid bar or maybe a thick wire ???

Still it looks like a hobby for the folk who like one speed, FLAT OUT speed  {-)

Actualy we only have one line from the pole, then approx 3ft from the hull it has bridle which then fixs to 2 point on the hull.
It is very very rare for a line to snap (they are replaced every year) and I have only ever seen it twice. Once at Blackheath  where it cleared the grass, the pavement, the road, and finaly crashed into a bus shelter (we stopped running hydro on the pond then) and the second time a 2 1/2 cc airscrew line snapped, it bounced off a straight runner on the bank, and then hit the club house, all in less than 2 sec. Its great fun though, below is an example of a novice class (6 1/2 cc) doing just over 105 mph.

I was doing some research in old MB magazines in the British Library some years ago, and found a report of a hydro breaking its tether on Cove (Farnborough) pond in the '30s, and demolishing a bathing hut!!

I saw flash steam hydros once at the old Ford (kingfisher club) lake - Awesome, truly awesome.

My humble flash steam steam hydro only ever got to 62 mph, I'm currently building a new one having learnt a lot over the years, and of course looking at the masters hydro---want you cant see in the pic is the boiler casing glowing a nice cherry red, oh and the noise it makes.

I'm stepping on toes, i'm sure. Now my ? is why? I watched the hydro and the guy walked away bored. My guess is just to see how fast they can go! I like to see my units ( rc boats ) work in different water conditions and various directions to see how they behave and correct them if i can. Well to each his own thing and if all the same, ALL would get bored. Variety is the spice of life!
