Plastic Model Kits
« on: August 28, 2008, 12:03:53 pm »

I couldn't find a thread for plastic models, so thought it might be nice to have one.

I've been building them for 13 years, and I'm only 16. They have all been hand painted thus far but I bought a new airbrush last week so they shall all be painted with it from now on.

I haven't made many recently, as I've taken up model boating, flying, and model car racing, so the hobby has been neglected for around 2-3 years now. The last one I built was the SU-37 (below), and before that the SU-27 (also below). I would like to model most if not all of the modern Russian Sukhoi fighters, but they are hard to come by. For example the SU-37 was a Zvesda kit that came from the aviation hobby shop in london (take a trip there whenever you can, you have never seen such a brilliant mess in all your life {-) ) . The fit was very poor, the panel lines are raised, and it was covered in flash, but I don't care, as I now have an SU-37 in my collection  O0

I made the B-52 when I was about 10.

I would also love to model Trumpeter's Su-27, in 1/32 scale, but it's £90 :o

It would be nice to take them to shows or something, because all they are doing around here is gathering dust.

The next one I will make is Revell's 1/72nd Mig 31 Foxhound, it's an top of my wardrobe waiting to be made.

Here is a very small sample of my collection.

p.s, if anyone has an UNMADE Su-27SK, SU-27UBK, SU-30MK, SU-32, SU33, SU-35, or SU-47, in 1/72 or above, please get in touch with me.

Nice models there Andy.

How have you found the airbrush with those Tamiya jar paints?
They cover well but you have to experiment and get the thinner just right with those ones, they are quite fussy when going through an airbrush.

I've also found that they dry very quickly in the brush, more so than Humbrol.

Oh and one last question, has anyone tried those new mode paints by Humbrol (I think) that come in the square tubs. I hear they are supposed to be very good for both paintbrush and airbrush

Not used the square tub things, shall have to buy a couple and get back to you on that.

Found the Tamiya paints great in the Airbrush, been cleaning out with Revell Aqua Clear airbrush cleaner, which is a godsend but is £2.50 a bottle, which is ok I suppose. I also tryed using Tamiya's own thinner for the paint, works a treat, currently have 31 Tamiya jars of paint, a total investment of £38.75 in paint :o , and 82 tins of humbrol enamel :o

Andy,

Hope you made the first spray champagne {-)

I dug my airbrush out last night (pure co-incidence) I am approximating to a scale British Seagull (long story)

When you are posting pics I notice they seem to be imbedded rather than "attached" could you tell me how you do this, pse

Looks like a nice Airbrush that one.

I like the small gravity feed cup on top, when I first started airbrushing I tended to put far to much paint in the cup, I've learned since then!

I'm off out this afternoon, I might pick up some of that paint and see how it fairs.

Andrewh.

To embed pictures you need to upload them to a hosting service, or your own webspace (photobucket.com seems to be popular) and then put the url of the image you upload inside some "Img" tags :) or click the "insert image" button in the message composition window (Its above the second smiley along)

I use photobucket to upload photos, this way, there is no limit on size, people cannot take my pictures, and it doesn't clog up Martin's bandwidth so much.

Yup I have been spraying things, including myself  {-)

The mossie is a Tamiya MkIV with Eduard or Paragon (I think) resin flaps, and some other detail bits.

It does but you have to get into photobucket to watch it, and it's the URL one you want, not IMG, for videos

I would just like to put my appeal back in incase it gets lost, so I'll do it big and red

I'm sure you would agree that the photograhy is as good as the scale model

When indoor flying I recieved the compliment "that canard flies for longer than it took you to build it"  Aren't people nice :)

Andy,

It predated digital photography!

It was rubber powered, foam PS construction (chicken tray fus, 2mm wall foam wings and canard) pusher with plug-in prop blades
Canard with high-mounted front canard, low wings with lots of inverted gullwing dihedral - no fin (none of my canards have fins)
I do have a pic of it at home, might hunt it down and  scan it

I think it weighed about 15 gms, so it canardly fail to fly

Andy

Found and scanned the pic of my indoor canard but I used to also flt it on calm nights at the local park; which starts 2 feet from the end of my garden

About late 80s is the date - when you were in your early modelling years

Looks like a fun model! I flew something similar a few years ago at a "have a go" session.

Oh..and I think the late 80's would be about 4 years before Andyn was born, and I would have been about 2!
Just goes to show you that despite all the technological advances....very little changes in these hobbies!

Nice models, Andy- but did you have ever tried to made the plastic-kits run? Much more fun  to do racing in the dining-room on a rainy day....

Happy modeling,

Gets stopped by dog hair and carpet though....
