Sopwith pup scale 1:4 or 1:5- anyone experiences with it?
« on: September 16, 2008, 11:22:25 am »

Hi folks, as I am doing a little flying as well I am very much interested in one of the kist of a Supwith Camel, Pup or 1.5 strutter. As I don`t want to go back to the ?*Ä&%§ß nitro engines a 2-stroke engine is the very first choice. Toni Clark has some nice one, the Zenoah Mark G-20. It`s a 2-stroke engine running with battery-powered ignition and runs on standard 2-stroke petrol. Has anyone experience with that engine and how to power one of the foresaid planes?
I know that there are some very nice looking models scale 1:4 and 1:5. How `bout them?

Happy modeling, Jörg

I have a Zenoah G-45 from Tony Clarke and it is a fine engine. A local friend has the G-38 with a Tony Clarke reduction drive in a 1/3 scale Pup; it flies extremely well. Another friend over here in Finland (Irish ex-pat this time) was selling a Mick Reeves 1/4 scale Pup kit. The MR kit is supposed to be the most accurate kit available for the Pup, up to World championship standard, as you would expect from a former world champion. I believe the kit is supplied in quite a small box, i could ask whether it is still for sale if you are interested.

Give some serious thought to electric power. Its viable nowadays even at that scale, and no oil soaked airframes. Rgds, Ed

The Thor engines Ripmax do are superb little engines, cheaper than a Zen too, I've seen one going an a large scale Giles and it flew very well with bags of power.

I wonder, the original, full size Pup was very loath to turn right, mainly due to the massive torque of its Rotary engine. It was said if you wanted to do a 90° degree right turn it was quicker to turn 270° left! This was very useful against the German Fokker triplanes, ( A direct copy of the Sopwith Triplane) as their engines turned the opposite direction so could not turn with the Pups in left hand circles, a trait that was exploited in those bloody battles, long ago.
