Does anyone produce bespoke plans for modellers?
« on: September 17, 2008, 02:32:30 pm »

Hello all.

After an excellent amount of advice given in a thread I posted a few months ago about "How to draw", and a good amount of homework on my part, I am pleased to announce that my drawing ability has raised itself from that of a half dead spider crawling accross a page having previously fallen in an ink well to the awesome heights of an over-enthusisatic 7 year old after too many glasses of sunny delight.

I have accepted the fact that I will never be good at drawing, and will not, for many years at least, be able to draw up my own plans, I can now, I think, get te basic concepts I want to get accross down in a picture, which has been my main ojective.

However, what would be good now is if I could tak my rough scrawls, along with details about angles, measurements etc, and somehow magic them into a plan.

To this end, I was wondering if there are any services available at a reasonable rate for an individual, to send some concepts an get back some plans.

There are design beraus around which do this, but they are targetted at other businesses, and seem to want between £2000 - £5000 for the work. This is at least 1 zero too many for me!

I was therefore wondering if anyone knew of a person, or business, that would do this sort of work at a lower rate which mere mortals could afford. I'm guessing someone like an ex-draughtman or similar who does it as a favour for friends, or on a semi-retired basis or something similar.

I'm not looking for a masterpiece, nor any research, major structural decisions etc. Just someone to take a series of badly drawn pictures and concept sketches, and turn then into one, or maybe 2 sheets of plans that are accurate enough that I can work off without everything being wonky.

Or is it unlikely that anyone would do that sort of work for less than a couple of thousand?

Thanks

Steve

You could try Dave Metcalf of Metcalf Mouldings. He's been drawing up plans for kit manufacturers and magazines for many years. I don't know if he does private commissions but it may be worth asking.

he does, colin.
was only talking to him last week on one of our "putting the world to rights sessions," and he was telling me that he was doing a set for someone.
didn't pry into the costs though. O0

Hi Steve,
I can do that sought of thing for you. My drawings are functional rather than pretty, but I draw up all my own designs. I am familliar with working in a variety of materials including wood and composites and metals, so any engineeringy bits that might need doing are no problem either. As to cost, I do it for fun..........plus a "drink." If you want to discuss any thing in detail then PM me and I'll give you my phone number etc.
GARY

P.S. If anyone else is interested let me know. If I can make a business out of it I'll chuck in the teaching.

I saw an advert on the TV which said teaching was a deeply rewarding job where you had fun fun fun all the time and made brilliant money.

It was made by the government, so it must be true.....

Then you have to be in the 2000 - 5000 quid category. Then if you got one commision a month then pay tax, rent, etc. You would be surviving.

It's true steve,
teaching is great fun the kids are great and the pay is not that bad if you take into account the holidays.
HOWEVER the S**T and stress descends all the way from the people who say what a wonderful job it is. It would be even better if they actually let us get on and teach rather than jump through -------ing hoops all day!

Rant over, anyone want any drawing done?

The education has been wrecked by performance tables, IMHO.

Logically there is a good argument for league tables, but the reality is that they have been destructive.

It is not the teachers fault, they have been hamstrung by the system.

I recently heard of a good cheat in a language oral test. The teachers cheat.
The sessions are recorded on audio tape.
When students were having trouble answering the teacher would write down the answer on a piece of paper for them. So the notion of integrity and standards have been lost in the chase for exam results. A sad case, but it is the system that encourages such instances of bad behaviour.

And when it comes to arguments about whether or not standards at A'level have fallen I am inclined to listen to the customer and not the subject (kids) or the vendor (schools). If the Universities, an informed group of customers, are saying the raw materials they are being provided with are not as good as in the past i am inclined to believe them.

The universities are also under pressure to pass people, and some students are being awarded passes that should not be, according to a report I read in the Torygraph.

Rant over.

Hi All,
Tigertiger, you hit the nail on the head with your assessment of what's required to "make a living" at doing commissioned drawings. I'm a professional design draughtsman (for longer than I want to remember), albeit mostly working outside the marine environment, and to do commissions for a living you need to charge those amounts, or you don't eat.
However, as model boats is my hobby, I don't mind drawing the odd plan for those of similar ilk, who have all their sketches and doodles, etc,  provided I don't have to undertake any research (this is the time consumer, as I've no doubt you all know).
So if any of you fellow Mayhemers are stuck for want of a pretty picture to work from, then PM me. No charge, sketches etc can be faxed, scanned & emailed, or via snail mail, and an electronic copy will be sent back, which you can then get printed off at your local print shop.
